The Staff Archaeologist performs a variety of professional scientific office and field work in support of archaeological studies and project effects analysis pursuant to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and other applicable state and federal regulations. The archaeologist is responsible for gathering data on cultural resources; performing preliminary environmental analysis, research, surveys, investigations, and studies; preparing reports; preparing routine correspondence; answering questions from the public; preparing regulatory and compliance documents; and other related work. This position is under the general direction of a Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisory), in the Office of Cultural Resource Studies.
Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Environmental Scientist exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. Desirable Qualifications
Possession of a college degree with a concentration in Archaeology, Anthropology, Native American Studies, Osteology, Cultural Resource Management, Geoarchaeology, or a closely-related field with demonstrated coursework in California Prehistory or History, American History and Architectural History. The incumbent must met the requirements of Professionally Qualified Staff (PQS) Principal Investigator per the Caltrans 106 Programmatic Agreement.
