Job Description and Duties
Under the direction of the State Pavement Engineer (SPE), Deputy Division Chief of the Maintenance Division, a Principal Transportation Engineer, the Senior Transportation Engineer serves as the Executive Engineering Assistant (EEA) responsible for assisting and supporting the SPE and Pavement Program Office Chiefs in high-level review and coordination of various pavement activities for managing the Pavement Program. This includes review and coordination of engineering and technical data, legislative information, and other information to ensure timely, accurate and consistent responses on pavement information. The EEA also provides assistance and support for strategic planning and management activities for the Pavement Program. The EEA directly reports to and receives supervision, requests, assignments, and direction from the SPE.
In addition, the Senior Transportation Engineer will provide the Pavement Program with a single focal point (SFP) coordinator for the Pavement & Materials Partnering Committee (PMPC). The incumbent is responsible for providing guidance to the task group and subtask groups of the PMPC to ensure that the groups are accomplishing the overall mission of the committee. The incumbent is responsible for monitoring the progress of the projects approved for evaluation to improve construction methods, material specifications and test methods utilized in the construction and preservation of transportation facilities.
Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Senior Transportation Engineer, Caltrans exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. Desirable Qualifications
In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
Incumbent must be a registered Civil Engineer in California and must have broad knowledge of the laws, Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) requirements and departmental conditions and policies related to construction of pavement facilities. Incumbent must have the ability to develop, interpret and apply policies and procedures as well as engineering, environmental and safety requirements regarding encroachment permits. The incumbent must have the ability to, based on engineering experience and expertise, act independently and exercise good judgment on matters relating to the planning and design of pavement structure for transportation facilities.
