Job Description and Duties
Under the general direction of the Supervising Transportation Electrical Engineer (District Division Chief of the Traffic Safety & Operations-Transportation Management Center (TMC), the Senior Transportation Electrical Engineer, Supervisor serves as the Branch Chief of the Traffic Maintenance Engineering (TME) & Intelligence Transportation Systems (ITS) Maintenance Support responsible for overseeing and managing the operational efficiency and performance of Transportation Management System (TMS) and infrastructure. The incumbent plans, directs, and supervises a team of journey level engineers and other staff responsible for monitoring, maintaining, troubleshooting, and documenting the operational performance of TME & ITS field elements, manages the field elements for asset management planning and maintenance, oversees the Highway Maintenance-4 (HM-4) Program to secure funding for Minor Projects, works with various agencies and partners to address ITS operations, maintenance, and emergency response issues, and performs other related duties.
Possession of a valid certificate of registration as an electrical engineer issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers is required for this position.
Appointment to this position is contingent on passing the Department of Justice (DOJ) background check.
Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Senior Transportation Electrical Engineer (Supervisor) exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. Working Conditions
This position involves both office and fieldwork. While working in an office environment, the incumbent works in a climate-controlled office under artificial lighting. Multi-floor buildings are equipped with elevators and stairs for accessibility. The incumbent travels occasionally to conduct field reviews outdoors and may be exposed to traffic conditions, dirt, dust, chemicals, loud noise, uneven surfaces, and severe weather conditions. The incumbent must remain vigilant and adhere to established field safety procedures to mitigate risks when working in the field. Furthermore, it is the incumbents responsibility to communicate and enforce proper safety precautions among staff to ensure a safe working environment for all team members.
This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.

Special Requirements
Possession of a valid certificate of registration as an electrical engineer issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers is required for this position.
Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a state owned or leased vehicle.
Candidates selected for this position must successfully pass a Department of Justice background check and the incumbent is also required to sign CHP Form 101A annually.
Statement of Qualifications (SOQ)-Applicants must also submit a Statement of Qualifications (SOQ). The SOQ is a discussion of how an applicant's education, training, experience, and skills meet the criteria in the duty statement and qualify the applicant for this position.
Failure to include and complete the SOQ as instructed may not be considered and may result in disqualification for the interview.

The SOQ must follow the number format, must respond to the criteria below, must not exceed two pages in length, and be typed in size 12-point Arial font.
- Detail your experience in leading or supervising electrical engineering systems including planning, directing, managing, and maintaining Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) field elements, communications systems, and electrical infrastructure. Highlight how your leadership has contributed to operational efficiency and system performance.
- Describe your experience in asset management and team leadership, including administrative responsibilities that highlight critical skills required for the position, such as team oversight, managing multiple priorities, collaborating with various stakeholders, problem-solving, and research.
- Provide your experience in addressing complex transportation problems, with a focus on implementing innovative, technology-driven solutions, and explain how you organized and led teams to execute these solutions in alignment with organizational goals and priorities.
- Discuss your relevant qualifications and experience for the duties and responsibilities required of the position.
