JOB SUMMARY: The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks is April to May but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: May 2024 Open to the first 125 applicants or until 12/10/2024 whichever comes first. MAJOR DUTIES: These positions support wildlife management and monitoring, with a primary emphasis on minimizing human-bear conflicts. Some specific duties include: investigating and documenting human-bear conflicts; trapping, collaring, and radio tracking bears; hazing bears exhibiting undesirable behavior; collecting survival, biological, and reproductive data; assisting with euthanasia of bears involved in conflicts with humans; providing park visitors, contractors and employees with information to reduce human-wildlife conflicts and entering field data into computer databases. Work is performed primarily outdoors in the front-country (e.g., developed campgrounds, picnic areas, and along roadsides). Fieldwork will require walking, running, and cross-country hiking in mountainous terrain for extended periods, often in inclement or severe weather. Temperatures can exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit and ozone levels exceed the California Health Standard of 0.09 ppm (parts per million) an average of one out of five days throughout much of the parks. Much of the work is performed after dark, when bears are most active, which will require late night through early morning work hours, including weekends and holidays. Occasional back-country field work may be required at remote locations in wilderness areas which will require hiking long distances carrying backpacks weighing up to 50 pounds. Physical Demands: The work requires physical exertion as a regular and recurring walking, hiking, or climbing over wet, rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; or bending, crouching, stooping, lifting or reaching to observe, collect, or record field data. Heavy items (e.g., equipment and packs up to 50 pounds) must be lifted and carried on a routine basis. Working Conditions: The work is performed in an office or outdoors. The work performed involved regular and recurring exposure to extreme weather conditions and terrain, poisonous plants, biting insects and wild animals.
