The Heavy Equipment Maintenance Manager plays a vital role within the company and contributes to the overall success and improved operations of the assigned yards. The ideal candidate will combine their employee relations and mechanical and technical skills to engage and motivate their team to perform at the highest levels, and increase reliability and life expectancy of all machinery, vehicles, and equipment, at a reasonable cost, while working to support and maintain production functions. This is accomplished by using inspection, planning, and scheduling best practices while taking into consideration the production requirements of the yard.
This position will work outside in varying weather conditions, and SA Recycling strictly adheres to all Metals Recycling Business Health, Safety, Environmental, and DOT standards.
Job Duties of the Maintenance Manager
- Dedicated to following the company’s Mission, Vision, and Values; in leading by example and committing to the health and safety of all employees, contractors, suppliers, and visitors by adhering to company policies, governmental regulations, and federal/state laws.
- Monitor equipment, vehicle, and machinery conditions through preventative maintenance and non-systematic inspections required by equipment stoppages, daily incidents, and pending turnarounds.
- Partner with the General Managers (GM’s) and coordinates the planning and scheduling of all maintenance activities for all equipment, vehicles and machinery throughout the year and assists in the development and tracking to the yearly maintenance budget.
- Formally schedule and communicate preventative maintenance activities based on priority for all equipment, vehicles, and machinery in accordance with the manufacture’s recommendations and guidelines.
- Coach and mentor mechanics and technicians; and follow up on assigned repairs and work orders.
- Manages vendor relationships and identifies alternative vendors if the need arises.
- Initiates, authorizes, schedules, and monitors routine contract work to the appropriate vendor to ensure agreed upon service levels and cost controls are in place; provides the scope of work to the vendor; approves purchase order requisitions; and maintains a cost control spread sheet for budget control purposes.
- Perform follow-up inspections post repair and/or for new equipment, vehicles and machinery installation or acquisition.
- Participate in the budgeting process and provide guidance to the GM in the planning and scheduling of major or costly maintenance activities.
Qualifications of the Maintenance Manager
- 5+ years’ experience maintenance experience in the scrap metal, mining, demolition, heavy equipment, heavy truck, military, or related industry.
- High School Diploma, or GED; post-secondary level education from a two-year college, technical school, or equivalent program.
- 5 years of progressively responsible management experience in leading fast paced and diverse operations.
- Demonstrated knowledge of preventative maintenance, diagnostic, and repair of diesel engine, transmission hydraulics, suspension, brakes, tire service, and electronics for various types of heavy equipment and trucks.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical bulletins, schematics, technical manuals, drawings, and procedures.
- Ability and willingness to work in an outdoor environment and in all types of weather.
- Advanced organizational and critical thinking skills with a results-oriented mentality.
- Demonstrated leadership experience with the ability to communicate effectively, interact with vendors and contractors, ability to manage and motivate employees, and promote a strong company culture centered on safety and quality.
- Bi-lingual (English & Spanish) language skills a plus.
