The primary purpose of this position is to perform duties associated with the treatment, preparation, and coating of wood, metal, glass, synthetic, concrete or other surfaces. MAJOR DUTIES: This is an open continuous vacancy announcement. Cut-off Dates: This is an open continuous announcement, in which applications are collected over several months, and have multiple cut-off dates. Applications will be considered throughout the open period of the announcement. The first cut-off date is 11:59 pm EST, DECEMBER 13, 2024. Initial consideration will be given to candidates whose applications have been received before the first cut-off date. Additional referral certificates will be issued when a hiring official exhausts current certificate and/or additional vacancies need to be filled. Prepares surfaces by scraping, wire brushing, masking, spackling and sanding surfaces. Cleans, degreases and removes oil or wax buildup. Removes scale, rust, dirt and old paint from surfaces so that coating materials will adhere properly. Obtains supplies and equipment, sets up ladders and scaffolds, covers items with drop cloths and tape, and performs all necessary preparatory work. Mixes, thins, blends, matches, tints, and tones coating materials following specific oral and written directives. Applies coating materials such as primers, paints, varnishes, shellacs, using standard application techniques and ensures that coating finish meets surface protection requirements. Uses and maintains tools such as brushes, rollers, spray guns, graining devices, compressors, as well as common hand and power tools to do the work. Maintains records and documents of actions throughout the season. Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean environment. Uses and assures proper fit of required safety equipment and clothing Working Conditions: The work is done inside and outside, with dirt, spray, and fumes usually present. The employee is sometimes required to prepare, treat and coat surfaces outside in all types of weather. Protective equipment and clothing such as safety shoes, safety glasses or sun glasses, gloves, rain gear, hard hats, coveralls, respirators and other protective gear are required, which are sometimes heavy and uncomfortable. Frequent exposure to the possibility of cuts and bruises; may occasionally be exposed to the possibility of broken bones.
