JOB SUMMARY: This GS-07 Archeological Technician position is located at Canyonlands National Park, in the Division of Resource Stewardship and Science and based out of the Southeast Utah Group headquarters in Moab, UT. This is a TERM position open to the first 50 applicants or until 11/29/2024 whichever comes first. All applications submitted by 11:59 (EST) on the closing day will receive consideration. MAJOR DUTIES: This is a TERM position (more than 1 year) with an initial appointment expecting to last at least 13 months but may be extended up to a total of four years. Term positions do not convey permanent status in the Federal service. DUTIES: Identify and evaluate archeological deposits, architecture, features and artifacts within the context of their physical setting. Use Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers, GIS and remote sensing techniques such as Photogrammetry, Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) to acquire, analyze and display archeological data. Record and document archeological site information and assessments of site condition and integrity. Apply communication skills to coordinate and collaborate with colleagues, other park staff, supervisors and the public to ensure mutual understanding of assignments and objectives of cultural resource protection laws and policies. Prepare reports and other forms of written materials to document and communicate assignments, results, and management implications of cultural resource inventory and monitoring activities. Physical Demands: The work is partially sedentary with prolonged standing, walking, and bending often required. Heavy items (e.g., packs up to 50 pounds) must be lifted and carried on a routine basis. Work Environment: The work is performed both in an office setting and in the field. Survey and excavation work is typically performed in isolated areas; the incumbent must therefore be familiar with outdoor safety and survival skills and must be able to operate a vehicle on rough roads.
