Summary
Roseville Public Works seeks to hire three Engineering, one Environmental, and one Sustainability summer intern to assist in the delivery of projects and programs such as construction survey and inspection, stormwater treatment, citywide recycling, climate and sustainability efforts, and more.
Essential Duties Responsibilities
Position is from May to September, full time, and works under the supervision of the City Engineer, Environmental Manager, or Sustainability Specialist. Duration of position can be modified to meet school schedules, and there may be an opportunity for part-time or full-time employment during the school year. Job assignments are based on interest and ability. Duties may include:
- Engineering
- Entry-level engineering work related to survey, design, construction & maintenance of the City’s infrastructure.
- Estimating, measuring, inspecting, and documenting construction activities.
- Assist staff with topographic and construction surveys, traffic counts, erosion control inspections on construction sites, and utility locating (Gopher State One Call).
- Assist staff in field & office work including inventory and inspections of assets.
- Education and outreach to increase awareness of funding assistance and regulatory programs.
- Environmental
- Implement the City’s Comprehensive Surface Water Management Plan
- Inspection of public and private Best Management Projects (BMPs) and drainage systems.
- Model and analyze drainage systems for water volume and water quality.
- Education and outreach to support the city’s stormwater initiatives.
- Sustainability, energy efficiency, resiliency, and carbon footprint
- Assist in the implementation of the City’s Green To Go Program, the City’s Energy Action Plan, and the Resilience & Environmental Protection chapter of Roseville’s 2040 Comprehensive Plan.
- Assist in developing the City’s Climate Action Plan.
- Develop and recommend policies to achieve sustainability.
- Recommend and implement actions to improve the City’s sustainability efforts and reports (e.g. Green Step Cities, B3 Benchmarking, etc.).
- Update and expand the City’s Water Conservation Program and Sustainable Steward Award Program

- Student at an accredited university or technical school pursuing a related degree.
- Valid driver’s license.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Experience with surveying equipment, AutoCAD, and/or ArcGIS (including extensions such as Spatial Analyst, etc.).
Knowledge & Skills:
- Punctual, reliable, dependable, and able to work independently.
- Experience using Microsoft office products (Word, Excel and Access).
- Positive attitude and energetic.
- Possess tact, courtesy, and good judgment to provide customer service to the public and contractors.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Detail oriented with the ability to accurately collect data, maintain records, and report information.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
Physical Demands & Working Conditions:
Roseville Environmental/Sustainability Interns generally work indoors, with periods of work outdoors. Roseville Engineering Interns generally work outdoors, around construction sites while carrying locating or survey equipment, with periods of work indoors.
