The NF Recovery Quality Assurance Technician reports to the NF Recovery Manager. They are responsible for ensuring that sampling and testing requirements are met at the plant. Additionally, they will focus on securing, organizing, and analyzing the information collected from NFR products. The incumbent must be able to use various types of equipment to analyze samples along with being able to accurately determine types of items being sampled.
This position operates within defined parameters. The primary goal of this position is to achieve excellence in all facets of the position. Providing the highest quality product safely, effectively, and efficiently decreases accidents and errors and increase profits.
Essential Functions:
- Environmental and Health & Safety (H&S)

- Operational Performance & Best Business Practices
- Responsible for performing quality control tests of product and waste by measuring and evaluating materials per the SSI/MMRB sampling protocol.
- Utilizes tools, equipment and instruments to prepare and weigh samples including set up and maintenance.
- Records and reports on result and maintains the internal computer data base of sampling.
- Responsible for understanding the nine product streams that must be collected on a daily basis for testing.
- Items include large, intermediate, and small zorba, large zurik, small zurik, and coated wire.
- Oversees and instructs others in the collection and proper labeling of samples and oversees and instructs others in processing samples when needed.
- Responsible for interpreting test results, drawing overall conclusions and making recommendations to improve process and desired product quality.
- Determines anomalies in sample results compared to control charts and identify process issues.
- Responsible for keeping current on developing technologies used in the sampling process and impacts to the material testing program.

Interpersonal Contacts:
Internal contact is by phone, email, and face-to-face contact with others, specifically the divisions of the Radius Group.
Job Conditions:
This position is regularly exposed to all weather conditions. Physical hazards such as noise, fumes, and dirt are present due to the equipment, machinery, and scrap as would be found throughout the scrap yard. Safety shoes, hearing protection, respirators, face shields, and additional personal protective equipment as needed, must be worn to eliminate the risks associated with these hazards. Travel is not required for this position.
Handling multiple issues regarding safety and maintenance increases pressure. Workload may be unpredictable, and pressure can be substantial during peak times. Critical deadlines require considerable adaptability. Disturbances of workflow and/or irregularities in work schedule are expected and occur on an intermittent basis. Extra hours may be required, sometimes on weekends, weekdays, and holidays.
Physical Activities Required to Perform Essential Functions:
Ability to: lift and carry up to 10 pounds occasionally; sit for extended periods of time, up to 6-8 hours per day; write by hand and keyboard for extended periods of time, up to 6-8 hours per day; assemble papers, paper punch, staple, file; apply sufficient force to open and close file drawers. Ability to communicate by speech and hearing continuously. Communication is primarily by phone, email and sometimes in person, with other departments within the Radius Group. Visual acuity needed for close detail work, preparing, and analyzing data figures, accounting, and computer use.
Qualifications:
High School diploma or GED Certification preferred. Minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience in a similar role or scrap industry preferred. Ability to develop and maintain constructive and cooperative working relationships with customers and other employees required. Mathematical and problem-solving skills, basic negotiation skills, attention to detail, and basic typing skills required. This position requires possession of a valid driver’s license and the ability to drive an automobile.
Proficiency in all MS Office Suite, including Outlook; typing; accuracy and attention to detail; excellent professional, oral and written communication skills with all levels of personnel and customers. Ability to: prioritize multiple projects, work well in a time sensitive environment, follow instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form, and deal with problems involving several specific variables in or from standard situations. Needs to be flexible.
