ONE (1) POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCHER OR RESEARCHER B’ POSITION AT THE RESILIENT SOCIETY DEPARTMENT

www.cut.ac.cy) invites applications for one (1) position at the Post-doctoral Researcher or Researcher B' level at the Resilient Society Department of ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence. The position is open either on a full-time (100%) or part-time employment basis. The successful candidate specializing in the Energy Sector will work under the Eratosthenes Center of Excellence at the Resilient Society department in the Access to Energy Cluster.
ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence is an autonomous Centre of Excellence with Cyprus University of Technology as its sole stakeholder, specializing in earth observation, space technology and geospatial analysis. Cyprus University of Technology has a 16-year experience in earth observations and geospatial analysis. Through the 'EXCELSIOR' H2020 Teaming Project (
https://excelsior2020.eu/), ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence aspires to become a Digital Innovation Hub for Earth Observation and Geospatial Information by offering knowledge, responsible research, open innovation and application services capable of sustaining Cyprus' development. ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence aspires to actively contribute to the European Research Area (ERA) priorities in Atmosphere and Climate, Resilient Societies and Big Earth Data Analytics, as well as to become the reference Earth Observation/Geoinformation Centre for research and innovation in the Eastern Mediterranean, Middle East and North Africa (EMMENA) region.
A core activity of ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence is to conduct high caliber, state-of-the-art research, both basic and applied. A central task is to acquire research funding for the Centre, to provide facilities to the researchers, and to support them to acquire funding for their research independently and via international and local collaborations. Collaborations with industrial partners are particularly encouraged and facilitated.
Description of the Position
The successful candidate will be assigned to the Department of Resilient Society within the Centre of Excellence, in which earth observation-based research will be conducted in the thematic domain of Energy. The selected Researcher will work under the Coordinator of the Department of the Resilient Society. In close collaboration with the respective Department’s Coordinator, the Researcher will implement the strategic plan of the Centre.
A core activity of ERATOSTHENES CoE is to conduct high caliber, state-of-the-art research, both basic and applied. A central task is to acquire research funding for the Centre, to provide facilities to the researchers, and to support them to acquire funding for their research independently and via international and local collaborations. Collaborations with industrial partners will be particularly encouraged and facilitated.
Appropriate measures of success will be collaboratively determined based on the Centre’s strategic growth plan and sustainability targets. These will be revised periodically by the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors.
Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be placed in the Resilient Society Department of ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence, and is expected to contribute towards shaping and advancing its research and innovation agenda by:
1. Contribution to the development of solar radiation / energy measurement and forecasting systems;
2. Creation and organization of a scientific team on solar / energy research;
3. Contribution to the exploitation of solar energy data, through research projects and collaborations with public and private bodies;
4. Contribution to the transfer of know-how in solar energy related research and technology (satellite and in-situ measurements, modelling) from the National Observatory of Athens, Greece and the Physicalisch Meteorologisches Observatorium Davos, World Radiation Center, Switzerland, to Eratosthenes Centre of Excellence;
5.Collaboration with the ECoE Atmospheric research group on active and passive remote sensing of the atmosphere, towards common research activities including solar measurements and atmospheric remote sensing;
6. Actively participating and ultimately leading world-class research programs (bottom-up) in the field of Energy, using state-of-the-art infrastructure;
7. Responsibilities (e.g. use, calibration, etc.) related to the state-of-the-art infrastructure of the Centre;
8. Securing financial and other resources from national, regional and international sources;
9. Establishing local, regional, and international research networks that can support the long-term research agenda and priorities of the Department;
10. Foreseeing the European Roadmap for Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) systematically;
11. Support mentoring, educating and providing research guidance to graduate students and PhD-candidates;
12. Engaging with government and industry bodies and institutions to raise the profile of ERATOSTHENES CoE as a research-intensive institution;
13. Any other relevant duties deemed necessary.
Qualifications1. PhD in a subject related to atmospheric measurements (ground based or satellite), measurement analysis, modelling of solar radiation/energy (such as Renewable Energy; Numerical Weather Prediction; Atmospheric Physics; Solar Radiation Modelling; Computer Science; Remote Sensing; Mathematics; Physics; Geoinformation; Surveying Engineering; Spatial Planning or equivalent);
2. Contractual working experience of at least two years in the field related to solar radiation and/or solar energy research;
3. Scientific peer review publications and conference presentations/proceedings related to "measurements and/or modeling and applications of solar radiation/energy";
4. Proven experience of cooperation with European research bodies related to the subject "measurements and/or modeling and applications of solar radiation/energy";
5. Management and supervising skills;
6. Programming skills experience in working for European Commission / European Space Agency projects will be considered an asset;
7. State-of-the-art scientific expertise in one or more of the following areas will be considered as an advantage:
- Remote sensing / Earth Observation / satellite data processing;
- Exploiting multi-source data EO-based and in-situ/crowd data and development/assimilation of data/models to support cross-sector research and services/solution provision in the field of Energy;
- Risk Analysis/Risk Reduction/ Decision Making;
- Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning techniques;
- Computer Science and Geoinformation Engineering;
- Big data management and distributed processing of big satellite scientific data;
- Development of automated application systems will be an asset but not mandatory (experience in relational and non-relational databases, application programming interfaces, Linux scripting, web frameworks);
- Working for European Commission / European Space Agency projects.
Minimum Requirements for the post of Post-doctoral Researcher or Researcher B'
The minimum requirement for the position of Post-doctoral Researcher or Researcher B' is to hold a PhD degree.
The appointment will be for a period of one year (12 months) with the prospect of renewal for another year. The annual gross salary for the (full-time) position:
- Post-doctoral Researcher: will range from €36732.10 to €52908.42, depending on qualifications. It is noted that there is provision for 13th salary (the cost of the 13th salary is proportionally incorporated in the monthly remuneration).
- Researcher B': will range from €54328.16 to €61946.19, depending on qualifications. It is noted that there is provision for 13th salary (the cost of the 13th salary is proportionally incorporated in the monthly remuneration).
