The Organisation
SteelWatch is a recently established international climate change non-profit driving corporate accountability in the steel sector with a focus on companies headquartered in Europe and Japan. Internationally the Japanese steel industry is one of the biggest influencers and also one of the largest climate laggards in the global landscape. SteelWatch has a vision that the steel industry will commit to a 1.5 degree warming trajectory this side of 2030.
The global steel industry has the power to make or break our ability to preserve a liveable climate. Despite promises to reduce emissions decades from now, the world’s largest steelmakers are moving far too slowly. The role of SteelWatch is to challenge the complacency of steelmakers and drive urgent action. It does this by scrutinising steel companies, campaigning for changes in corporate behaviour, and building a new narrative that this sector is not hard to abate but essential and urgent to transform.

The Role
In this role you will lead, develop, and implement creative campaigns to drive change in Japan's steel industry using pressures across the steel value chain and geographies. As a member of the first climate NGO specialising in steel decarbonisation, you will work closely with your international colleagues across the Asia-Pacific, Africa, and Europe.
Keeping abreast of public discourse, the changing political landscape and technological advancement within the steel and other industries, you will drive systemic change to the long-held methods of steel production, the iron and steel value chain and the industrial structure itself. Eventually influencing the relationship between industry and a decarbonised society. In this role you will;
- Track, monitor, and respond to companies, their investment calendar, and announcements
- Work with partners to co-create and deliver campaign strategies
- Face the media as the campaign spokesperson responding to emerging news
- Engage with corporates, experts, financial institutions, and government
- Build partnerships with others working on the decarbonisation of steel industries
Skills Required
You are ideally a native Japanese speaker and a dynamic strategist with a passion to drive climate action in corporate sectors. You have the ability to use your creativity to coordinate campaigns with multiple actors in Japan and beyond. You are a critical thinker who provokes dialogue, and you have ideally engaged an industry in negotiations to achieve greenhouse gas emission reductions or driven other systemic change initiatives.
Due to the pioneering nature of this role, applicants with varying levels of experience from a variety of career backgrounds will be considered, but importantly you have a change-making mentality combined with strong delivery and negotiation skills, with the potential to grow into the role. Ideally you have some climate or energy understanding/experience and an understanding of how to challenge corporate decision makers.
