Job Description and Duties
Under the supervision of a Caltrans Maintenance Supervisor, and functional direction of a Caltrans Highway Maintenance Leadworker, is responsible for and performs miscellaneous labor work and light equipment operation in connection with the maintenance of state highways and facilities. In his/her absence, a Caltrans Maintenance Leadworker or other qualified person may be in charge. There are times when incumbent may work for other Supervisors and/or work units, as workload requires. Will receive some training from other members of the crew. Must be in possession of a valid Class C California Driver License.
Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Caltrans Highway Maintenance Worker exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. Desirable Qualifications
In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
Must have knowledge of materials, methods, equipment, and tools used in highway maintenance and construction; provisions of the California Vehicle Code as it pertains to the loading and operation of motor vehicles; and rules and regulations pertaining to highway maintenance practices. Possession of a valid Class C California Driver License. Ability to work safely around high-density traffic. Ability to work effectively alone or with others. Must be able to analyze various work situations accurately and make sound decisions.
