It may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs. MAJOR DUTIES: This position is located in Katmai National Park and Preserve in the Maintenance Division. The typical season for this position is April - September, but varies during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, and/or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: April 2025. Although the official duty station is Lake and Peninsula County, you will be duty stationed at Brooks Camp, AK. Selectees may be moved between duty stations within park boundaries. Duties include, but are not limited to the following: Selectee learns proper methods and processes for water systems status, storage levels and when water conservation measures should be implemented. Is responsible for seasonal start up and shut down of the various well houses' holding tanks and distribution systems throughout Brooks Camp. Operator will winterize systems thoroughly to prevent the need for extensive repairs during the following years' start up. This will include a proper blowdown of all distribution lines to each individual cabin with an air compressor, followed by a charging of each line with RV antifreeze/glycol. Oversees collecting water samples and keeping associated records organized. Collects and coordinates the delivery of monthly coliform and nitrate samples and records laboratory test results. Oversees the annual pumping of septic sludge and vault toilet sludge, treatment, and disposal. Performs plumbing related duties including planning, layout, and routing of piping systems specifically related to the water and wastewater fields. Installs and repairs different types of piping including ductile iron, copper, galvanized steel, asbestos, PVC, and cast iron as well as transition couplings and valves associated with these materials. Rodding sewer lines, repairing various pumps, and general plumbing maintenance, which includes sewage lift station repairs and wastewater collection systems. Maintains and troubleshoots systems ranging from large primary voltages to small millivolt/milliamp digital circuit boards, and touch screen equipment. Must be knowledgeable of all wire gauges and sizes, and their controls. Must be capable of applying all facets of electrical and instrumentation ability associated with the fields of water and wastewater maintenance. Uses technical manuals, blueprints, drawings, and sketches to assign and/or complete work orders. Performs minor maintenance to buildings, housing and grounds using the following building maintenance skills: hydraulic repair, plumbing, painting, and carpentry. Physical Demands: Works from ladders, scaffolds, platforms, and where surfaces are to be coated, or the parts of the systems worked on are hard to reach and require incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Regular lifting and carrying of items up to and in excess of 50 lbs. Regular lifting, carrying, and setting of supplies of weight over 100lbs. Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside in both heat (up to 90F) and extreme cold (down to 45F). The incumbent is required to work in inclement weather and/or wear protective clothing that is sometimes uncomfortable and heavy. Wind, snow, rain, and ice and other outdoor weather conditions may exist. Biting insects are nuisance and are common and can be debilitating. Government housing is available.
