Department Background
The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and Cornell University’s second largest college. Occupational and Environmental Health (OEH) is part of Office of Capital Projects and Facilities Services. OEH addresses the workplace health and safety needs of college faculty, staff, and students, as well as environmental stewardship of college farms and greenhouses. OEH provides pesticide applicator training and assistance with pesticide handling and storage, record keeping, reporting, regulatory interpretation and environmental management. OEH also provides farm safety programs, and assists with a variety of other safety, health and environmental issues found in agricultural research.
Position Summary

As the OEH Associate for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University, college-wide responsibilities include programs to assure the proper management of chemicals. The OEH Associate is responsible for the management of chemicals utilized and the provision of staff training and guidance related to chemicals in alignment with the University’s Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) office’s policies and procedures. Also, receives chemicals, enters information into the chemical management system, labels appropriately, manages inventory and completes regular audits. Serves as a chemical management resource for research laboratories. Guides and assists with safety and compliance related to storage and disposal of chemicals. Provides training related to chemical management inventory as needed.
The OEH Associate will provide guidance and assistance again in alignment with the university’s EHS policies and procedures with a variety of other safety, health and environmental issues throughout CALS, including material recycling and waste disposal, biological and chemical hazards, PPE assessments, food safety, other specialized safety issues found in agricultural research, and training of employees and students on safety policies, procedures and regulation. CALS OEH is the primary point of contact with all college departments regarding occupational and environmental health issues and will liaise with EHS on appropriate guidance and procedures.
Serves as resource and liaison to CALS Department Safety Representatives (DSR), as well as serves as a liaison Cornell EHS. Support EHS communications on safety directives/issues to the DSR community and answers or directs inquiries appropriately.
Required Qualifications
- Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
- Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
- Bachelor’s Degree in relevant area or equivalent, with at least two years of relevant experience.
- Familiarity with physical sciences and chemistry.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills in multi-cultural settings.
- Must be able to multi-task and prioritize.
- Proven ability to foster effective working relationships.
- Confidence and ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
- Strong attention to detail, proven computer literacy and willingness to learn.
- Experience writing correspondence and documentation, developing educational materials.
- Ability to communicate with tact and diplomacy with a wide range of internal and external constituencies is a must.
- Must have demonstrated ability to handle sensitive/confidential material in a professional manner.
- Strong analytical skills.
- Proven ability to work in a team context and to set priorities, manage competing demands and to provide timely response to urgent issues.
- Comfortable developing and delivering presentations to large and small audiences.
- Solid experience with standard desktop productivity tools, including word processing programs, database management systems, and spreadsheets.
- Ability to sustain ethical workplace practices and confidentiality.
- Must be able to set priorities and manage competing demands.
- Demonstrate in thought and practice Cornell University’s Staff Skills for Success.
- Identifying opportunities for process improvements and then executing upon them.
Preferred Qualifications
- 2-4 years’ experience in general safety and health with an emphasis on chemical safety.
- 2-4 years’ experience in academic research environment.
- 5+ years’ experience with OSHA Laboratory Standard, chemical management and education.
- Master’s Degree in relevant discipline
