Role description:
The Arcadis UK Environmental Planning Discipline is a mature part of the wider Environmental and Sustainability / Resilience business and is seen as a key part of the growth opportunities across the Global Business Areas.
We require a Senior Technical Director with a strong track record of leading the environmental and consenting aspects of complex major projects, with particular focus on the Defence and / or Nuclear. Our projects span all consenting regimes, all sectors and all phases of the project life cycle from needs case development through to construction. The successful candidate will have proven experience of delivering successful consenting strategies and producing robust and high-quality EIAs as well as driving excellent collaboration with design teams that drive project success.

Role accountabilities:
The role of the Strategic Growth director will be to develop, lead and support growth into key growth sectors across Environment and Sustainability, in adjacent and established markets focusing on (but not exclusively) Nuclear and / or Defence, working collaboratively and closely with the wider Arcadis. The Strategic Growth Director reports directly to the Environmental Planning Business Director.
Responsibilities of the role include but are not limited to:
- Develop, deploy and support the execution of a market strategy / business plan for the UK Environmental Discipline, working with the Global Arcadis Solution & Sector Leads as required.
- Set annual budgets for and identify investment for the market’s strategy.
- Work and collaborate with existing Sector Leads, within and beyond the UK Environment Discipline.
- Be responsible for the development and growth of a pipeline of opportunities linked to the Market Strategy.
- Act as Pursuit Director for strategic opportunities.
- Act as Project Director to support the delivery of projects with multi-disciplinary potential for key client accounts and frameworks that support and facilitate the strategy.
- Develop and maintain relationships with key clients and oversee Key Client Management activities through regular quarterly reviews and setting key client targets.
- Monitor and identify trends and develop them into commercially viable propositions.
- Develop and maintain excellent senior-level relationships with clients (internal and external) and where appropriate contribute to Key Client Management plans and activities.
- Lead and coordinate activities to achieve strategic and commercial targets, collaborating to source people/skills from the most appropriate teams in Environment and beyond.
- Lead Go / No Go discussions liaising as necessary to obtain buy-in to pursuing and delivering an opportunity to advance our strategic objectives.
- Represent Arcadis at sector and key client events and support the drive to raise the profile of both individuals and Arcadis, with a commitment to continuing to develop an appreciation of wider services available across Environment.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Excellent working knowledge of the UK Planning system and consenting process, and a solid understanding of environmental and sustainability principles and environmental technical specialisms.
- Delivering projects across multiple consenting regimes including Development Consent Orders, Transport and Works Act Orders, Town and Country Planning Act, Hybrid Bill etc.
- Experience across multiple sectors and all stages of the project life cycle including strategic optioneering, single option development, EIA, requirements discharge post consent and detailed design and construction.
- Have experience of leading multi-disciplinary teams and growing technical capability
- Leading project teams through planning inquiries or examinations – expert witness experience is desirable.
- Experience of developing and taking to market value propositions.
- Have experience of working at a senior level with diverse internal and external stakeholders, and evidence of building effective client relationships
- Demonstrate ability to drive innovation and a growth mindset culture within a business
- Experience in multi-disciplinary co-ordination and leadership of projects, with good project management and technical skills.
- Experience in consulting and negotiating with planning authorities, regulators and stakeholders
- Commercial expertise, including forecasting, project management and quality assurance
- Relevant degree or equivalent qualification, with chartered status
- A flexible, pragmatic, and collaborative approach to work.
- Desired: Full Member of IEMA/IES/CEnv/RTPI.
