Purpose of Announcement
EXAMINATION IS ANNOUNCED TO ESTABLISH AN EMPLOYMENT LIST TO FILL ONE (1) CURRENT EAST JEFFERSON VACANCY IN THE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL AFFAIRS AND FOR FUTURE VACANCIES AS THEY OCCUR.
Kind of Work
Under general supervision, the purpose of the position is to conducts highly specialized inspections on residential, commercial, industrial, and Parish-owned properties and right-of-ways for compliance with provisions of various municipal service contracts and compliance with relevant sections of the Jefferson Parish Code of Ordinances. Investigates citizen complaints regarding storage and curbside placement of solid waste, illegal dumping, unsanitary conditions, mosquito breeding, rodent harborage. Applies knowledge of applicable contracts and ordinances to collect, photograph, record and file evidence to document conditions that constitute a code violation. Investigates and documents conditions and issues warnings and violation notices relative to public health, garbage and recycling, litter and illegal dumping, dumpster noise and storm debris, mosquito and rodent activity requiring proximity to swimming pools, ponds, canals, heavy equipment, unsanitary conditions and other environmental hazards. Operates a personal computer, including the usage of word processing such as Microsoft WORD and Excel spreadsheets, Adobe Acrobat, Power Point, and data (including photographic evidence) entry, manipulation, and tracking, in a Service Request/Complaint database. Employee interprets maps, Google Earth, and Web Map. Operates a digital camera and GPS. This position includes adapting to new and changing technology involving computers and photographic equipment. Utilizes technical writing skills to include business English, rules of grammar, punctuation and spelling, and knowledge of alphabetic and numeric filing principles and standards. Position requires driving of a Parish vehicle, thus possession of a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record will be given preference.
Minimum Qualifications For Admission to Examination
Meets one of the following two options:
I. Current employment and permanent civil service status with Jefferson Parish; plus, substantial (approx. two years), paid work experience involving extensive public contact in assisting citizens with government programs/services or in performing inspections of residential and commercial properties, to enforce compliance with service contracts, laws, and/or governmental ordinances/regulations.
OR
II. Successful completion of twelve (12) credit hours of coursework at an accredited college; plus, substantial (approx. two years), paid work experience, as described in Option I.

The examination may consist of a written test, a rating of training and experience, an oral panel interview or any combination thereof. Acceptable applicants will be notified of the time, date, and place of any assembled testing. Applicants must supply complete and accurate information concerning their training and experience including a detailed description of their work experience, the names and addresses of all previous employers and the dates of employment. The information is subject to verification and the Personnel Department reserves the right to determine the quality and quantity of education and experience claimed for credit.
