This position is best suited for a professional who can engage and foster a proactive, positive environment. It is a roll up your sleeves type of individual who will frequently walk the production floor and get involved in the optimal safety of each and every employee.
Responsibilities include:
- Ensure the efficient and effective delivery of all Health, Safety and Environmental policies, procedures, and practices relating to the prevention of injury, accident, and environmental risk
- Provide guidance and coordinate the work efforts of the Health, Safety and Environmental function
- Design, develop, and deliver HSE policies, procedures, systems, and practices
- Ensure all Health, Safety and Environmental policies, procedures, and practices meet or exceed legal, corporate, and customer requirements
- Coordinate all investigative efforts relating to incidents, accidents, spills and other environmental issues (noise complaints etc.) ensuring timely and effective resolution of any and all issues arising from such situations in order to minimize the impact to the business and to employees
- Foster and reinforce the mind-set of prevention and early intervention as it relates to HSE
- Provide support in employee training and education in the areas of HSE
- Provide knowledge and expertise to the business in order to resolve various HSE-related issues in order to minimize risk and optimize business opportunity
- Act as a company representative with the community at large and respond to residential, provincial & municipal inquiries/complaints as required (ie. MOL, Fire Department, Insurance)
- Seek opportunities for continuous improvement as it relates to HSE processes, systems, procedures and practices
- Support the organization’s cost reduction obligations through involvement in continuous improvement teams, projects, or suggestions
- Manage the department, providing employees with leadership, coaching, mentoring, training and performance management to ensure departmental effectiveness and productivity
- Perform regular formal/informal workplace inspections
- Report all accidents/incidents and unsafe conditions/behaviour
- Establish staffing levels within the department, ensuring all employees are appropriately selected, motivated and retained
- Perform and ensure team performs all job functions in a safe and healthful manner, abiding by all health, safety and environmental rules and regulations, promoting safety in the workplace
- Ensure Health & Safety and Quality corrective actions are adequate and effective
- Enforce safety rules and correct unsafe acts or conditions
- Be involved in the accident/incident investigation process
- Ensure new employees are trained and oriented
- Involved in development, review and enforcement of EHS procedures and policies
- Manage WSIB early to safe return to work (RTW) program
Minimum Qualifications:
- Completion of a two year College program in Health, Safety and Environmental or related field of study
- 3+ years of Health, Safety and Environmental experience or related field
- Good knowledge of all current applicable legislation
- Excellent organizational skills with an ability to multi-task and prioritize in a fast paced environment
- Excellent analytical and decision making skills
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to coach, mentor and build effective teams
- Results-oriented and able to work under pressure
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Computer literate in word & spreadsheet programs
- Manufacturing experience is preferred and considered an asset
