Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) is seeking a Remediation Specialist to support the life, health and safety mission of the Agency by identifying and remediating environmental hazards at all facilities. Ensures that all State and Federal Regulations are met regarding the remediation and disposal of materials, hazardous, universal and other types of waste. Supports and supervises the demolition of buildings and structures through the use of deconstruction and recycling methods. Provides planning, organization, coordination, and execution for the remediation and/or environmental compliance at all VADOC facilities.
Position provides analysis to ensure that liabilities potentially incurred by the Department are minimized through appropriate assessment, cost-benefit, training, and/or risk management analysis and decision-making. Provides guidance, direction, training and assistance with the implementation of corrective actions, design, recommendations and/or preventative measures to address deficiencies. Ensures the safety of the public, contractors, and VADOC field personnel in accordance with OSHA regulations during projects. Works with inmates and staff through the remedial re-entry program, providing guidance and training for returning citizens.
This position is construction focused and requires the candidate to possess or obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) to complete the job duties within 6 months of hire. The selected candidate must successfully complete 40-hours of OSHA HAZWOPER Training and 30-hour OSHA Construction Training within 12 months of hire.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent. Valid Driver’s License. Experience/proficiency in operating construction equipment (backhoe, track hoe, grader, loader, etc.). Knowledge of general construction practices. Experience interpreting construction plans and following blueprints. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple technical projects and programs. Experience training staff to utilize heavy equipment. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
Additional Considerations
Completion of or the ability to successfully complete 40-hours of OSHA HAZWOPER Training and 30-hour OSHA Construction Training within 12 months of hire. Demonstrated skill in the use of computers and related software to include Microsoft Office (Word and Excel). Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with the ability to operate a Manual Transmission (Manual Transmission Endorsement) or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
