The Opportunity
McElhanney, one of Canada’s Top 100 employers, is seeking an individual who is passionate about brownfield environmental programs to join our Prince Rupert, BC environmental division as an Intermediate Environmental Professional. The successful candidate can be located anywhere in British Columbia (preferably in a location with an existing McElhanney office) and will report through our Prince Rupert environmental team.
The Environmental Professional will lead brownfield projects from the initial proposal and planning stages; site investigation and remediation; and technical reporting. They will have a firm understanding of British Columbia’s evolving Contaminated Sites Regulation and their application on residential, commercial and industrial development projects on private and public land. The successful candidate will enjoy navigating through the complex brownfield projects for our clients – balancing the small details with big picture.
As a part of McElhanney, you will also be an important member of our growing environmental team and will have the opportunity to work with a team of more than 60 environmental professionals within the company with a wide range of expertise. In this role, you will bring a solid technical understanding of environmental compliance and brownfield work along with strong client-facing project management abilities. You’ll also have the benefit of working with a diverse range of other in-house professionals, including civil, geomatics, structural and geotechnical engineers, civil technologists, and survey professionals across regional offices to help solve your clients’ challenges.

What You’ll Be Doing
- Managing and leading field programs (i.e. environmental monitoring, erosion and sediment control, surface and groundwater monitoring, sediment and soil sampling).
- Authoring and reviewing environmental site assessments (Phase I/II/III ESAs) from proposal preparation through data collection, interpretation, and report preparation.
- Amazing your clients (internal and external) by providing regular budget and progress updates.
- Coordinating subcontracting specialties as required and supervising subcontractors for ground disturbance and utility location, borehole drilling, well installation and test pit excavation.
- Championing safety for yourself and field staff by preparing and adhering to site-specific health and safety plans.
- Becoming the go to person for internal and external clients, providing environmental advice and solutions to that is right-sized.
- Lending your technical and project management expertise to other departments (survey, materials testing, and civil engineering) to learn about and develop a holistic approach to project execution.
- Mentoring junior staff to support the internal growth of McElhanney’s environmental divisions.
Qualifications
- Relevant University degree or diploma in Biology, Environmental Science or Environmental Engineering with a minimum 7 years of relevant work experience.
- Registration in good standing as a professional engineer, biologist or agrologist in British Columbia, or immediately eligible to be registered.
- Construction related experience an asset.
- Possession of a valid BC driver’s license is required at the time of hire.
Skills & Attributes for Success
- Communication: Able to effectively communicate through written updates (emails, daily reports, investigation reports) and in a face-to-face setting (at the office, at a construction site, with clients and stakeholders, etc.).
- High productivity, attention to detail, and an ability to work well independently and in a team environment are essential.
- Adaptable: Ability and interest to travel and work on remote projects, and willingness to work overtime and on weekends, as necessary.

What Can We Offer You?
Salary Range: $90,000 - $115,000. McElhanney offers fair compensation that is commensurate with the individual’s education, experience, skills, and professional qualifications. The posted base salary range is representative of the required level of qualifications and experience for the position as noted in the job posting. The salary offered will be based on the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.
