Position Purpose: The Assistant Environmental Educator is a seasonal contracted position at Gather New Haven, focusing on delivering the Cultivating Long Island Sound Stewards Program. The Asst. Environmental Educator will be responsible for implementing educational components of the program, which has recently received funding from the Long Island Sound Futures Fund of the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. This program is being run in collaboration with program staff. The Asst. Environmental Educator contracted position reports to the Environmental Educator, who oversees activities and interactions related to environmental education, as well as community outreach and engagement.

Core Responsibilities:
- The contracted Assistant Environmental Educators role is to assist the Environmental Educator in the delivery of after-school programing and field trips.They will work for 27 weeks each year for a combined total of 7 hrs per week, delivering 54 after school sessions per year.

Develop and implement environmental education afterschool programs for middle school students using STEAM-based Project WET curriculums. The focus will be on environmental science, environmental justice, social justice, stewardship, and social-emotional development. The programs will involve facilitating student-driven projects with the intention of inspiring, equipping, and mobilizing the next generation of environmental leaders. These programs can be delivered on-site in schools or in the field.

Guide program participants on visits to our nature preserves along the New Haven Harbor and the rivers that flow into it. These visits will demonstrate the connections between living ecosystems, ecology, human society, and conservation.

Lead kids on explorations of city parks and neighborhoods to study the distribution of public greenspaces. This will include looking at any disparities, environmental damage, and historical or ongoing land remediation efforts that affect water systems.

Organize urban ecology and marine ecology field trips that include liberal arts and guest speakers to enrich the experience.

Ensure that all programs, projects, and properties meet seasonal production and management goals in collaboration with relevant staff members.

Support and promote the organization’s stance on racial equity, environmental justice, and food justice.
Required Skills and Experience
- Bachelor’s in environmental sciences, or education, project management, or equivalent experience.
- Familiarity with urban ecology, marine ecology, aquaculture, and conservation.
- Excellent interpersonal, listening, and written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong moral character, high level of emotional intelligence, high motivation, self-discipline, and organization.
- Skill and passion to develop deep, trusting relationships with diverse populations.
- Legacy/sustainability oriented; strong documentation and record-keeping skills.
- Project WET certified or willing to complete training after hire.
- Experience working with school and family communities in an informal setting, and demonstrate cultural competency to work with diverse audiences.
- Experience working or leading summer camp activities and out-of-school time activities (after school, holidays, and weekend programs).
- Experience with workshop planning and facilitation.
