We are currently seeking an experienced Safety & Environmental Manager to join our team reporting to the Biron Division VP & General Manager. This is a full-time salaried position.
Job Responsibilities:
- Demonstrate safety as a core value and establish a safe work environment by actively leading the safe execution of work
- Enhance the Biron safety culture by driving engagement and ownership in all programs throughout the organization.
- Focus the organization on living up to the standard set by our safety vision; reinforce all aspects of our safety mission statement daily.
- Member of the Mill Leadership Team.
- Sponsor of the Mill Safety Leadership Team.
- Manage the continuous improvement of the mill Low Likelihood / High Severity Steering Teams (LOTO, Work @ Height, Confined Space, etc.).
- Lead and provide expertise in decisions involving work practices and safety requirements for reduction of work-related injuries.
- Oversee worker’s compensation insurance policy and program as required by law.
- Supervise and develop the Safety Co-op Student, Safety Advocate, mill nurse, and security team.
- Provide support, guidance and direction for employee driven safety committees/roles.
- Coordinate mill security and risk assessment efforts.
- Maintain records required by OSHA and ND Paper, such as accident reports, injury classification, etc.
- Provide guidance to operating departments when changes are made that could impact the safety aspects of standard operating procedures.
- Evaluate and approve all safety assessments on investment card packages and new chemicals entering mill.
- Coordinate environmental, safety and health standards training for all employees as well as fire, chemical, emergency, and first aid/CPR training for Emergency Response Team Members.
- Maintain understanding of environment, health, and safety federal and state regulatory developments and impacts.
- Support all environmental permitting requirements for the Biron Division (water, air, storm water, hazardous waste storage/disposal, and spill, prevention, containment and countermeasures)
- Support environmental compliance programs and perform environmental compliance related reporting to ensure compliance with all local, state and federal regulations.
- Support record keeping and reporting activities to comply with federal and state environmental requirements, mill permit requirements, corporate policies, and meet all reporting deadlines.
- Interact with outside regulatory agencies, other Biron Division Team Members, ND Paper Leadership and members of the public.

Required Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in safety engineering, environmental engineering, industrial hygiene and experience of 7 to 10 years in environmental, health and safety functions, with experience in pulp and paper or chemical process industry, preferred. Note: Special consideration will be given to qualified individuals with a Master of Safety degree and/or CSP certification
