JOB SUMMARY: This position is a Biological Science Technician, GS-0404-6 working in Seneca Falls, New York for the R5-Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge. This is a term position expected to last 13 months but may be extended up to a total of 4 years at management's discretion. MAJOR DUTIES: As a Biological Science Technician your duties will include, but are not limited to, the following: Assists in planning and execution of wildlife studies, censuses and surveys such as establishing schedules and procedures for accomplishing and reporting the work. Monitors and implement activities related to conservation, management, and/or control of wildlife. Captures, applies visual and radio tags, and gathers physiological and spatial data on wildlife. Assists in planning plants surveys and recommends plant management practices. Monitors and assists in control plant disease outbreaks, pest plant control, mowing/seeding activities and vegetation removal. Collects, assesses, and organizes biological and physical environment data from field investigations and reports findings to determine actual and potential impact on fish, wildlife or plant resources from development projects, restoration projects or habitat improvement projects. Use automated databases to enter, organize and perform preliminary analysis of collected field data, using standard statistical methods in preparation of wildlife and/or botany reports. Analyze and summarize biological data using a variety of database software programs or other presentation approaches, ensuring records are detailed, precise and accurately transferred (e.g., terrestrial, geologic, geographic, hydrologic, ecologic, and environmental data). Assist in preparing news release drafts for area media, and/or presenting informational or educational programs to individuals, local organizations, and schools. Operates farm tractors, light trucks, vehicles, small water craft and various other equipment such as generators, radios, radio tracking equipment, water monitoring equipment, global positioning systems and cameras. Provides work direction and guidance to biological technicians and volunteers and YCC enrollees, including safe handling of tools and operation of motorized vehicles and watercraft.
