ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: Assignment will involve some or all of the following
responsibilities:
• Lead a small project team to conduct WFP’s annual environmental footprint reporting exercise, involving the collection, review, analysis, reporting and data visualization of data from colleagues globally in the areas of: energy/fuel use, official travel, water use and wastewater disposal; waste generation and management;
• In collaboration with Environmental Unit colleagues and relevant country office stakeholders, support the development of corporate environmental management system (EMS) tools, templates and other materials for identifying, assessing, managing and reporting on WFP’s environmental impacts related to:
energy/greenhouse gas (GHG), waste and water, sustainable procurement and resource efficiency, pollution prevention and other relevant aspects as required;
• Respond to queries from field colleagues on environmental issues; contribute to the implementation of WFP’s EMS and related environmental improvement projects in field locations; assist in tracking project implementation in the corporate environmental actions database; contribute to data analysis for ongoing
unit initiatives (e.g., WFP carbon tax, corporate environmental plan of action, KPI monitoring);
• Support environmental assessment missions in country offices and other field locations as appropriate: assist with data collection, site observations, stakeholder interviews and drafting resulting environmental action plans; provide follow up support with action plan implementation and monitoring progress according to EMS Manual procedures.
• Draft environmental awareness-raising materials and conduct training workshops / make presentations on assigned environmental topics and activities
• Liaise with relevant UN entities and organizations on environmental issues through the Greening the Blue initiative as required.
• Research and support development of new data collection tools to facilitate WFP’s annual environmental footprint exercise.
• Contribute to other environmental initiatives undertaken by the team, as directed by the supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Education:
• University degree in environmental management, environmental engineering, natural resource management or a related subject required.
• Formal training in environmental management systems (EMS), environmental impact assessment (EIA), corporate environmental reporting standards, sustainable procurement, or life cycle assessment (LCA) will be highly regarded.
• Membership of a relevant professional organization (SocEnv, AAEE etc.) is desirable.
Experience:
• Minimum of three (3) years of postgraduate relevant professional experience in environmental sustainability, environmental management, environmental engineering, or other related field
• Prior experience in the following areas will be well regarded: experience working in an environmental sustainability role, particularly in the areas of corporate environmental reporting, EIA, energy efficiency, waste management, water management or sustainable procurement
• Prior experience working in the UN System or for another large international organization is an asset
• Prior experience working in, or supporting projects based in, developing countries.
Knowledge & Skills:
• Excellent numerical/analytical skills, time management, written and verbal communication skills are
required
• Familiarity with data visualization tools, preferably Tableau
• Knowledge of international standards such as ISO 14001, BS 8001 (circular economy), ISO 20400
(sustainable procurement) or the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, is desirable
Languages:
Written and oral proficiency in English is essential.
Intermediate (or better) knowledge of another WFP official language (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, Spanish or WFP’s working language Portuguese) is desirable.
