Responsibilities:
Determining the physical and chemical properties of environmental samples using quantitative and qualitative analyses in physical or organic chemistry using gas chromatography with mass spec (GC/MS) instrumental analytical equipment housed in several mobile laboratory trailers; performing a variety of EPA analytical methods, such as SW-846 8260, 8270, 8081, 8082 and other methods; screens and logs in samples, prepares samples for laboratory analysis, maintains equipment, orders supplies and assists chemists when requested; participates in planning and strategy meetings; suggests modifications to existing protocols and standard operating procedures (SOPs), equipment, processes or techniques; participates in evaluation of processes, including set up, O&M of equipment and apparatus, and more complex experimental procedures involving novel samples.
The primary function of the units is to provide on-site and remote chemical analysis during an Incident of National Significance - analysis on-site of all sample matrices (air, soil, water, and surface wipe) for the presence of toxic industrial chemicals, chemical warfare agents and their breakdown products. This position will require a background screening and US citizenship, and participation in medical monitoring. Some travel will be necessary.
Qualifications:
- This position requires a B.S. degree in Chemistry or a related physical science and good communication and computer skills.
- Candidates must have 3-5 years of experience with environmental laboratory operations and familiarity with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within an environmental laboratory.
- Knowledge of organic sample preparation and chromatography is required.
- Knowledge of Agilent MSD MassHunter software is desirable.
- Familiarity with EPA methods for organic chemistry and OSHA HazWoper certification is preferred.
