Hanson is seeking candidates for our 2025 Environmental Assessment Student Internship programs. We have potential opportunities at our corporate headquarters in Springfield, Illinois or Indianapolis, IN
Our Environmental Assessment discipline is made up of environmental scientists and biologists who navigate local, state, and federal National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) environmental regulations and permitting for primarily public sector projects including Departments of Transportation (DOTs) and local governments.

General Assignments: Interns will perform routine environmental assessment tasks using standard procedures under supervision of professional environmental scientists and biologists and may assist Hanson engineers, designers and technicians in disciplines related to their field of study.
Interns will typically support one or more experienced professionals in performance of assignments, spend time shadowing actual operations, and have unique assignments that support larger projects as well as experience the day-to-day workings of environmental assessment. Interns may perform and/or participate in additional activities/events which help them build a strong network within the Hanson community and with fellow interns. Internships may require travel to suppliers, customers, or other Hanson locations. Interns will also be required to work a 40 hour work week.
Key Responsibilities: Environmental Assessment interns will be expected to perform the following key responsibilities with assistance from a Hanson professional:
- Prepare NEPA documentation primarily for categorical exclusion-level projects but also environmental assessments and environmental impact statements
- Gather and provide data for the preparation of environmental reports and studies
- Assist in conducting various environmental field surveys including threatened and endangered species habitat surveys, tree identification, stream characterizations and wetland delineations
- Utilize software packages such as ArcGIS desktop or ArcGIS Pro for environmental data gathering and exhibit creation
- Assist in the preparation of environmental permit applications
- Perform related duties such as writing memoranda, letters or general reports; collecting and correlating data; maintaining records; attending meetings; and operating technical equipment
Qualifications:
Intern must be actively enrolled in a relevant field of study such as Environmental Science, Environmental Biology, Natural Resources, Biology, Ecology or Environmental Engineering. The ideal candidate will have successfully completed their sophomore year, be actively enrolled in an accredited 4-year college or university and have familiarity with Geographical Information System software.
