Opportunity Summary
The Environmental, Health, Safety and Quality (EHSQ) Manager is responsible for providing critical support on EHSQ issues, assisting in the formulation and review of EHSQ policies and procedures, and contributing to the development of plans to achieve EHSQ objectives. The role involves managing risk reduction programmes, ensuring compliance with all relevant permits and regulations, and acting as the Environmental Management Representative while maintaining adherence to company and legislative requirements. Additionally, the position includes coordinating safety committees, auditing environmental parameters, and delivering monthly EHSQ reports, all while promoting a positive safety culture and ensuring effective communication across the business.
Key Duties and responsibilities
- Provide assistance and support to the business on EHSQ issues.
- Assist the plant management team in formulating, reviewing, and developing EHSQ policies and procedures.
- Contribute to the creation of plans that outline how agreed EHSQ objectives will be achieved.
- Determine and communicate EHSQ priorities based on risk assessment and safety performance to meet agreed objectives.
- Act as the Environmental Management Representative and fulfil the duties as outlined in the site's quality procedures.
- Ensure compliance with all permits and legislative EHS requirements.
- Maintain adherence to all company and owner EHSQ requirements.
- Report any deviations from prescribed operating environmental limits to the plant management team.
Other reasonable Duties
- Be actively involved in the effective implementation and management of all EHSQ programmes.
- Ensure risk management is conducted through effective risk assessment, risk control identification, and the implementation of control systems.
- Manage risk reduction programmes and improvement initiatives.
- Act as a link between the detailed technical requirements of current legislation, business standards, codes of practice, and the business requirements and operational activities.
- Review and report on accident performance and trends within the business, while providing proactive approaches, measures, and methods to support the identification, setting, and achievement of improvement targets.
- Assist the management team in reviewing and auditing the overall performance of the EHSQ Management System.
- Develop a network within the sites and the larger business to ensure the effective communication of EHSQ matters to all staff, promoting a positive culture.
- Communicate with the Owners' Representative on all aspects of EHSQ.
- Coordinate the activities of all safety committees.
- Audit environmental parameters daily to ensure operations remain within prescribed consent levels.
- Establish procedures for the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH).
- Provide expert input to risk assessments and method statements.
- Manage, monitor, and audit all waste streams from the site and act as the authorising agent for waste control.
- Deliver monthly EHSQ reports to the management team for issuance to the owner.
- Provide ongoing EHSQ training and advice to all facility staff.
- Administer control of allocated budget areas.

The EHSQ Manager reports to the Plant Manager.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Physical requirements include the possibility of standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing, routinely lifting up to 15 kg, and when necessary, use of a respirator.
Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g., hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, gloves, and high voltage protective equipment etc.). Working with hazardous materials may be required. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.
Fitness for Duty
All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening.
Technical Knowledge, Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor's degree (BSc) in a relevant field, such as Environmental Science, Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Management, or Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical). Relevant work experience may substitute education on a year-for-year basis.
- Professional certifications such as NEBOSH General Certificate or Diploma, IOSH membership, or a recognised environmental qualification (e.g., IEMA) are desired, but not required.
- Desired experience in safety and environmental compliance for operating facilities, preferably within a power plant or power-related industry.
- Experience in power plant operations is desired, including an understanding of the interrelationship between environmental impacts and compliance.
- In-depth knowledge of major environmental legislation related to air, water, hazardous materials, and waste management, with expertise in at least one specialised area at the regulatory requirement level.
- Familiarity with applicable safety statutes, regulations, and principles, along with experience in developing and implementing Health and Safety programmes and procedures.
- Proficiency in using computer-based recording systems.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with a proven record of building consensus among internal and external stakeholders and an exceptional ability to build positive relationships with others.
- Ability to perform and manage multiple varied tasks in an industrial environment, with the capability to identify and analyse potentially complex compliance risks promptly.
- Strong oral communication skills are essential for serving as the key contact during compliance visits and delivering training material effectively. Excellent writing and analytical skills are also needed to present facts and recommendations clearly in both formal and informal communications.
