Ensure safety and security by patrolling zoo grounds, monitoring in person and cameras, and responding to emergencies, including first aid, and CPR. Guards also maintain access control, escort vendors and contractors, and prepare regular and detailed reports.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Control access to buildings and premises, including physical barriers, keys, locks, clickers, staff identification, and visitor logs
- Enforce rules and regulations of the zoos; inform guests and employees, answers questions, eject trespassers and escort visitors such as vendors, inspectors, and contractors while being helpful and composed
- Monitor surveillance systems; alarms cameras, crowds and access points
- Patrol buildings and grounds regularly to maintain order and establish presence
- Inspect perimeter fences and gates, doors, and guest barriers to detect breaches; investigate suspicious activities, incidents and other alarming behavior
- Respond to complaints, incidents and emergencies; act as first responder with first aid, CPR, and use of AED; contact and interface with outside agencies such as police and fire departments,
- Protect people, assets, and the organization from threats, criminal incidents and safety and security breaches
- Maintain accurate and detailed records; report observations, information, occurrences, incidents and surveillance activities to supervisors regularly, and timely.
Physical Demands
- Constantly stands, and moves about on foot from one area to another; occasional runs for emergency response
- Frequently raises/lowers, transports, and positions objects (including, but not limited to First Aid bags, packages, etc.) weighing up to 50 pounds from vehicle to ground, from ground to vehicle or storage shelves; grasping with hands and arms, to maintain supplies
- Frequently reaches, pushes, pulls and throws objects with hands such as to open and close doors/gates, and deliver parcels
- Frequently uses good balance to climb, ascend/descend stairs and ladders, traverse uneven or slippery terrain to make patrol grounds
- Frequently stoops, kneels, or crouches to work, such as to inspect barriers
- Frequently converses with guests, co-workers and contractors to exchange accurate information for safety and security purposes. Must be able to inspect, detect and identify safety issues using hearing (radio)
- Frequently inspects, detects and identifies product safety issues using sight (including color identification, and smell (to detect smoke, gas, etc.)
Work Conditions
- Occasionally in an indoor office setting using computer, printer, copier, and other office equipment; Frequently in an outdoor setting including high/low temperatures and extreme weather
- May be assigned to work at either Franklin Park or Stone Zoo sites
- Ability to work flexible hours, including overnight, weekends, and holidays.
Minimum Job Requirements
- High School diploma or GED
- Valid driver’s license and driving record in good standing.
- Basic computer skills
- Clean criminal record
- Customer service skills and emotional intelligence, helpful, trustworthy and reliable.
- Communication and listening skills, able to diffuse situations before they escalate; observant, with good attention to detail
- Able to work and communicate with a diverse population; fight unconscious bias, stereotypes and microaggressions
- Capable of making sound judgments.
- Able to follow directions both, written and verbal.
- Able to remain alert at all times while on duty.
Preferred Job Requirements
- A certificate in security training from an established institution.
