Our millions of visitors enjoy viewing our collections, gardens, and aquariums, and learning about our animal conservation mission at our beautiful 64-acre campus in downtown Indianapolis. Behind the scenes, our employees in the Rides and Facilities department work to keep our mechanical rides and equipment needs serviced and running smoothly. Working in the Rides and Facilities department at the Zoo presents interesting challenges and a great working environment for professional skilled trades workers. We are currently on the hunt to add a skilled (min. three (3) years field experience) Rides Mechanic/ General Maintenance Technician to our Rides and Facilities team!
Ideal candidates are committed to advancing the Zoo's mission to protect nature and inspire people to care for our world. The successful candidate will have at least three (3) years of experience working in the mechanical, electrical, welding electronic, or pneumatic field. General maintenance knowledge of electrical, plumbing and/ or HVAC skills is highly desirable. High school diploma or equivalent is required. Relevant vocational/ trade school certification is highly desired.
This is a full-time, 40 hours per week, position that requires flexible availability to work weekend, evening, holiday, and overtime as needed, though we do try to have consistent scheduled days off. This role will be on call during the winter months for inclement weather and to assist with snow removal. Must also possess a valid Indiana driver's license and have a driving record that is insurable by the Zoo's insurance provider.
Position Requirements and Experience (Note: there are strenuous physical requirements to this position including but not limited to):
- Maintains, replaces, or repairs the machinery and equipment of the Zoo and its buildings as requested by the Facilities Manager, and keeps all in good working order.
- Must possess practical skills and proficient knowledge in two or more trades such as: mechanical, electrical, electronics, hydraulics, pneumatics, welding and/ or small combustion engine repair and maintenance.
- Troubleshoots and repairs the Zoo rides (train, roller coaster, carousel, and skyline). Will assist in the ongoing training of Facilities department staff in daily ride inspections and maintenance of the rides equipment. Advises Facilities Manager on all safety related issues and needs as it relates to rides and vehicles.
- Maintains accurate and detailed maintenance and inspection records for all of the Zoo's rides. Will assist in the annual State Rides inspection.
- Safely operates aerial work platforms such as boom and scissor lifts.
- May perform general maintenance duties that include but are not limited to plumbing, electrical, and HVAC.
- Ability to detect, assess, identify, and observe surroundings to make sound judgments, along with the ability to communicate verbally, and comprehend and decipher information accurately using a telephone and two-way radio.
- Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting at least 100 pounds of force occasionally, and or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/ or in excess of 20 pounds constantly to transport objects.
- Ability to transport and move items, exerting at least 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/ or up to 50 pounds of force frequently.
- Ability to ascend/ descend ladders, steps, and uneven terrain while maintaining body equilibrium to perform various jobs.
- Must be able to safely operate department tools and manual transmission vehicles.
- Adheres to all safety policies and wears proper safety equipment (PPE) including dust masks, respirators, goggles, hearing protectors, and safety harnesses.
- Must have and maintain a valid Indiana driver's license (or obtain one within thirty [30] days of hire date), and be insurable by IZS, Inc.'s insurance company.
