Job Summary:
The Marine Operations, Shipbreaking and Recycling Specialist is responsible for overseeing and managing the processes involved in the dismantling and recycling of ships. This role ensures that operations comply with environmental, health, and safety standards while maximizing the recovery of valuable materials from decommissioned vessels. The individual will also coordinate with customers including Navy, MARAD, regulatory bodies, manage project timelines, and ensure that all operations align with best practices in sustainable marine recycling.
Key Responsibilities:
- Marine Operations Management:
- Supervise the safe towing and beaching of vessels destined for shipbreaking.
- Oversee the docking, anchoring, and positioning of vessels at the recycling facility.
- Coordinate logistics for ship deconstruction, ensuring minimal environmental impact.
- Shipbreaking Process:
- Manage the dismantling of ships, ensuring adherence to industry best practices.
- Monitor the cutting and scrapping of ship structures, ensuring proper handling of materials like steel, copper, and other valuable metals.
- Oversee the safe removal of hazardous materials such as asbestos, oils, and chemicals.
- Environmental Compliance and Safety:
- Ensure strict adherence to local, state, national, and international environmental regulations such as for the safe and environmentally sound recycling of ships.
- Implement waste management systems to reduce pollution and environmental degradation during shipbreaking activities.
- Enforce health and safety protocols to protect workers from injury and exposure to toxic substances.
- Conduct regular audits to ensure safety standards are maintained.
- Recycling and Resource Recovery:
- Collaborate with dismantling personnel to maximize the recovery of metals and other recyclable materials.
- Optimize resource recovery processes to improve efficiency and profitability of recycling operations.
- Track and report on the volumes of recycled materials and waste products.
- Project Management:
- Plan and manage shipbreaking projects from initiation through completion, ensuring projects are delivered on time and within budget.
- Liaise with suppliers, contractors, and regulatory authorities to coordinate operational activities.
- Monitor project performance and implement corrective actions when necessary.
- Documentation and Reporting:
- Prepare and maintain detailed records of shipbreaking and recycling activities, including environmental impact reports, safety reports, and project progress reports.
- Ensure compliance with all necessary certifications and documentation required for shipbreaking and recycling operations.
- Stakeholder Communication:
- Attend meetings and represent the company in discussions with industry bodies and regulators.
Skills:
- Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Excellent understanding of health, safety, and environmental standards.
- Technical knowledge of ship structures, deconstruction techniques, and material recovery.
- Ability to lead teams and work collaboratively with cross-functional departments.

Work Environment:
- Physical presence at shipbreaking yards or recycling facilities.
- Exposure to industrial environments with potential safety hazards (appropriate PPE required).
- Travel to different maritime locations and shipbreaking sites may be required.
- Exposure to outside with heat, humidity, cold, dust.
