Position Purpose:
The Lead Shift Supervisor directs and manages the Shift Supervisors and the employees within the wastewater treatment operations, and processes on an assigned shift to ensure that safe and efficient operations are continued, and to execute the proper technical procedures and management policies that result in cost-effective contract compliance and compliance with all applicable permits and regulations.
Primary Duties/responsibilities:
- Perform leadership and operational duties on an assigned schedule.
- Obtain and record information regarding plant operations, changes and condition by reading the log of operations, daily briefing with prior and oncoming shift personnel, reviewing/updating the white board, checking for written email or verbal direction from the Operations Manager.
- Ensure that all rounds, records, analysis, readings, plant housekeeping, and process control plan measures assigned to the shift supervisors are performed.
- Throughout the assigned schedule, make swift and appropriate actions and adjustments to ensure that all compliance measures are maintained within the plant, lift stations, and canyon collector facilities.
- Immediately notify Operations Manager or Project Manager regarding any non-compliance issue, acts of vandalism or theft to or of the plant facility or property.
- Ensure that you and others assigned to the various shifts follow and adhere to all safety precautions, measures, policies and procedures.
- Use senses (sight, smell, hearing, touch) during plant rounds to make pertinent observations of the plant equipment, unit processes and overall plant condition and report the observations to direct supervision.
- Model professional behavior; report to work as scheduled, on time and prepared to work.
- Work flexible schedule that may include nights, weekends and holidays.
- Conduct laboratory analytical testing for product quality assurance/ control; and routine tests
- Operate, maintain, install and repair (automatic and semi-automatic machines) equipment including pumps, valves, gates, mixers, chemical feed, dust collector and odor control systems
- Operate/Monitor control panels, adjusts valves and gates.
- Monitor flow meters, gauges, flow ratios, pressures and related controls through instrument panels, SCADA computer terminals, and programmable logic control units in assigned areas.
- Diagnose basic operational problems and take corrective action per procedures.
- Ability to work independently in compliance with given instructions and direction.
- Perform grab and go field tests in order to adjust chemical dosages for processes.
- Comply with appearance and dress policies to ensure a safe and professional work environment.
- Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as defined by policy, work practices, and customer.
- Maintain a safe, neat and clean work environment this includes: work area and equipment.
- Work effectively in a team environment and provide support and assistance to others.
- Assist with collecting data and completing reports/ projects to support business operations
- Lead special projects to improve safety, operations, and employee development
- Train other employees to safely and properly use equipment at site.
- Take initiative to offer solutions and assist in problem solving at site.
- Engage with customers within scope of responsibility to provide work updates and notifications.

- Perform other job duties as requested to support business operations.
Work Environment:
- Spends 100% of time in an operations environment.
- May need to work outside in inclement weather conditions and drive a company vehicle to perform duties.
- May serve rotational 24 hour emergency on-call.
Possible Work Hazards:
- May be exposed to possible operations hazards including dust, fumes, toxic and caustic chemicals, heavy machinery, high pressure, hot or cold temperatures, slippery surfaces, water and electrical equipment hazards.
Physical Demands:
- Amount of time spent – Standing 25%, Walking 75% for as many as five miles per shift.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.
- The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, or crouch and enter confined spaces.
- May be required to use ladders or stairs.
The employee must lift and/or move up to 50 pounds (occasionally 60 pounds).
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
Requires close visual observation to detect process non-conformance and machine malfunction.
Qualifications
Education / Experience / Background:
- High school diploma equivalent
- Experience as an on-site Grade III Shift Supervisor for activated sludge with aeration tanks facilities of equal or greater size complexity.
- Five (5) years of experience in the maintenance and operations of activated sludge with aeration tanks facilities or a minimum of three (3) years if certified as Grade IV or above.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:
- Knowledge and skills in the processes and methods of wastewater treatment, biosolids handling programs, air emissions systems and standards, laboratory standard methods for water and wastewater and operation and maintenance procedures for related equipment.
- Knowledge of pertinent federal, state, and local laws pertaining to wastewater treatment facilities with a NPDES permit.
- Ability to handle emergency situations with proper training.
- Ability to provide first aid, CPR and use SCBA equipment.
- Strong mechanical and technical aptitude.
- Superior interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to develop and maintain good working relationships with client, public, and employees
- Excellent management and organizational skills are also required.
- Ability to organize and manage assigned work tasks, respond appropriately to emergency situations, and accurately record facility readings, incidents, etc.
- Ability to operate within a team atmosphere including direction of staff assigned to the Shift Supervisors work shifts.
- Ability to shift priorities frequently and effectively perform under pressure.
- Ability to operate computer, typewriter and other office machines as needed. Skills in Microsoft Office Suite and SCADA systems.
- Strong basic mathematics and computer skills.
- Ability to work a 10 or 12 hour shift schedule which may involve night and weekend work.
Required Certification / Licenses / Training:
- CA SWRCB Grade III or above Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certification
- Must have a valid California SWRCB Grade IV WWTP Operator License within 3 years of being in the position.
