Position Summary
Plug Power is the industry leader providing hydrogen fuel cell systems for material handling equipment, backup power and E-mobility applications. The Product Certification Engineer is responsible for organizing and spearheading various product certifications and functional safety projects for Plug Power. Projects may vary from small volume product / installation to high volume serial production. The role resides in the engineering organization and plays a key role in managing the business’ overall product offerings to meet global standards. The position requires close interaction with various engineering groups in each business unit and work closely with supply chain, quality, manufacturing, and service teams to ensure designs meet cross functional safety and quality requirements. This position will additionally maintain knowledge of all applicable codes and standards both domestically and internationally which will directly impact the design approach taken by the team. The ideal candidate should exhibit both exceptional communication and project management skills along with a technical background. The successful candidate must be self-motivated, able to handle multiple project assignments and willing to learn and adapt within a fast-paced engineering organization.
Core Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead teams through the product certification process to comply with various global fuel cell, automotive and backup power standards
- Maintain up to date knowledge of industry standards and applicable codes
- Act as an interface for external stakeholders to exchange functional safety and homologation requirements and cascade requirements to systems, subsystems and components level
- Perform verification and confirmation reviews to ensure compliance to safety analysis including DFMEA, hazard analysis and fault tree analysis and 8D problem solving
- Oversee multiple complex schedules, setting priorities for internal teams as well as procurement, manufacturing, and service teams
- Advise management of the program statuses on a regular basis
- Coordinate the efforts of the engineering, sales and production departments to ensure programs are conducted in accordance with the safety standard requirements
- Coordinate prototype certification testing to qualify new designs
- Independently anticipate potential schedule delays and initiate plans for alternative actions as needed; able to rearrange competing priorities to ensure all deadlines are met
- Work professionally and cooperatively in a cross-functional team environment with a focus upon maximizing system safety, performance and customer satisfaction
- Represent Plug Power in a professional manner in all interactions
- Perform all other duties as assigned
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, electrical, chemical engineering, or a related field of study
- Minimum of ten (10) years relevant engineering experience in product compliance and certification.
- Experience in any of the following is preferred and highly valued:
- Hydrogen and/or fuel cells
- Automotive functional safety
- Oil and Gas, CNG, LNG, etc.
- ASME pressure vessels, API codes
- ISO 61508, ISO26262, UL2267 and CSA standards.
- CE Certification
- Ability to travel occasionally, up to 25% of the time
- Computer and software systems skills as applicable to position including but not limited to: XFMEA, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Project and Outlook
- Exceptional organizational skills
- Dynamic interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with diverse audiences and stakeholders
- Ability to manage complex projects and multi-task effectively
- Must be driven and self-motivated and excellent follow through
