Job Description and Duties
Under direction, to operate, navigate, and maintain a self-propelled ferry of the State highway system; to direct the loading and unloading of vehicles and passengers; and to do other related work. Operates a self-propelled ferry of the State highway system on a navigable slough or river; ascertains that ferry is secured to slips before vehicles enter or leave the ferry; directs the loading and unloading of passengers and vehicles; maintains a traffic count of all vehicles crossing the ferry; observes prescribed safety rules, regulations, and marine laws applicable to the operation of a ferry on inland waterways; operates, maintains and services ferryboat engines, controls, and equipment; services marine and roadway lights on ferry and ferry approaches; maintains cooperative public relations; prepares regular and special reports on the operation and condition of the ferry and of unusual incidents or accidents; performs or oversees the performance of minor work on the hull or superstructures of the vessel.
Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Ferryboat Master exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions.
