Duties and Responsibilities
- Under general supervision, develop culturally-relevant and cutting-edge, hi-tech curricula to build the curricular offerings in Sustainable Agriculture (agriculture, animal and plant sciences, aquaculture and aquaponics, and natural resources and environmental management); and align the Windward Community College (WCC) Sustainable Agriculture program with similar programs taught elsewhere throughout the University of Hawaii (UH) System.
- Plan, organize and carry out instructional and non-instructional assignments.
- Develop curriculum, teaching strategies, instructional materials and methods which: 1) use current technology in instruction where appropriate; 2) integrate instruction of appropriate foundational skills into course content; 3) develop and assess the competencies and skills for the course student learning outcomes; and 4) address the learning needs of community college students.
- Teach classes that contribute to WCCs Sustainable Agriculture program utilizing online, hybrid, and/or distance delivery formats as needed. Maintain a minimum of one office hour per week for each course taught.
- Collaborate with the Dean, Department Chair, and Faculty to coordinate and implement usage of building facilities, including shadehouse, agricultural lands, and aquaculture/aquaponics systems for instruction in sustainable agriculture.
- Work collaboratively with UH Office of Sustainability, community partners (e.g., local businesses and non-profits), and the Service Learning Office to develop internships and project-based learning opportunities in sustainable agriculture.
- Assist PI or Department Chair with managing grant budget, and purchasing of supplies and equipment. Analyze relevant project data, prepare and submit annual reports on grant activities and other reports as required.
- Ensure program is compliant with all federal and state regulations governing agriculture, aquaculture and aquaponics production of plants and animals.
- Develop and maintain an approved program of professional self-development. Participate in departmental, faculty and administrative committees.
- Assignments may include evening and weekend hours, off-campus locations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- (a) Master's in agriculture, botany, tropical plant and soil sciences, biological engineering, molecular biosciences and bioengineering, natural resources, natural resources and environmental management, tropical conversation biology and environmental science, biological sciences, or ecology, OR,
- (b) Bachelor's in agriculture, botany, tropical plant and soil sciences, biological engineering, molecular biosciences and bioengineering, natural resources, natural resources and environmental management, tropical conversation biology and environmental science, biological sciences, or ecology, and three years of related work experience.
Desirable Qualifications
- Coursework and/or experience in related fields such as agroecology, aquaculture, aquaponics, hydroponics, sustainable food systems, organic farming, horticulture, crop production, food systems, ethnobotany, tropical agriculture, native Hawaiian plants, integration of digital technologies into agriculture, and/or international development and global food/agriculture systems.
- Experience managing or operating a farm, nursery, aquaculture/aquaponics facility, or similar operation for commercial, educational, or research purposes.
- Successful teaching experience teaching community college courses as substantiated by both student and peer assessments.
- Knowledge or experience in traditional Hawaiian natural resource management and food production practices such as Hawaiian fishpond operations and kalo (taro) cultivation.
- Knowledge of the latest technologies utilized in agricultural production, including sustainable practices.
- Knowledge of the agriculture industry and community in Hawaii, especially Windward Oahu. Ability and/or successful experience collaborating with industry and community organizations.
- Knowledge of or experience with federal and state regulations governing the use of vertebrate animals in education and research.
- Demonstrated ability in curriculum development including online and/or hybrid instruction.
- Demonstrated ability to work with students, peers, and staff.
- Knowledge and understanding of student-centered learning and the community college philosophy.
- Experience conducting course level assessment of student learning outcomes, and analyzing relevant data, and utilizing the results to improve instruction.
- Knowledge and understanding of Windward Community College's mission.
- Demonstrated ability to serve as a mentor to students engaged in project-based research and/or internships.
