Job Summary: The Arboriculture Supervisor is responsible for supervising, directing, and conducting work related to the specific native specimen trees, hazard tree mitigation, IPM programs, and overall maintenance and resiliency of trees throughout Memorial Park. The Supervisor will be expected to plan, oversee, and support branch technicians in daily duties and training. Previous experience and extreme focus on safety for both themselves and their employees is required. This includes ensuring safety during daily practices such as climbing, rigging, and using a bucket lift. The Supervisor reports to the Operations Grounds Manager who tracks branch progress and supports the supervisor in branch necessities and daily activities.
Base Schedule: Monday-Friday 6:00am- 2:30pm, may adjust based on seasons.
Responsibilities and Duties Include:
· Use and implement best arboriculture management practices to maintain specimen trees in a competent and timely manner by assessments and monitoring, integrative pest management including herbicide application, fertilization, and pruning.
· Supervise and assist the Arboriculture branch to maintain specimen tree health and diagnose and/or remove failing and dead trees inside the park.
· Felling hazard trees and bucking tree material for chipping and transport.
· Safely utilize specialized equipment such as large trailers, skid steer, backhoe, fork and bucket lifts, chainsaws, pole saws, and stump grinder.
· Training team members on safe operating of tree maintenance equipment and tools, including daily upkeep of chainsaws and climbing gear.
· Together with the Arboriculture team, lead weekly park and tree risk assessments and prioritize tasks to maximize risk reduction.
· Safely perform specialized techniques for tree care such as climbing, rigging, and using aerial lifts for tree removal and/or pruning.
· Create weekly plans and goals with crew members to be accomplished.
· Take ownership of and uphold safety to the highest degree in all aspects of field work and machine maintenance.
· Keep detailed records of tree inventory, maintenance activities, and any other relevant data with a high sensitivity towards safety and aesthetics.
· Develop and implement tree care plans to promote longevity and growth: fertilizing, pesticide applications, and managing moisture levels through computer irrigation software.
· Must be able to identify native trees and pest species that might be associated with native trees.
· Prioritize and report required work using work order software.
· Conduct business with and monitor contractors working inside the park completing arboriculture tree work as needed.
· Attend arboriculture related capital project meetings, review design documents, provide professional input, and give feedback on project designs.
· Ensure appropriate inventory and care of chainsaws, tools, and supplies assigned for field operations.
· Strong skills using Microsoft Outlook, SharePoint, and online mapping software.
· Oversee and track all branch expenses.
· Develop and follow the annual Arboriculture branch budget.
· Ensure all tree zoned irrigation systems are working properly and report any issues to the irrigation maintenance team.
· Interact with Park patrons in a courteous and professional manner. Ensure team members are trained and adhering accordingly. Be prepared to provide accurate and pertinent information regarding MPC and the Park.
· Enforce MPC rules, safety policies, and procedures, and appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Conduct and document safety training as needed and ensure compliance with safety protocol.
Qualifications, the ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:
· Combination of a four-year degree in Arboriculture, Plant Science, Urban Forestry, or other related fields and 3 years of direct field related experience.

· 5 years of experience in an arboricultural tree care role in which 2 or more years are in a supervisory position.
· Professional experience in pruning, rigging, and climbing.
· An intense focus on safety for themselves and the Arboriculture crew.
· Highly motivated with strong project management, written and oral communication skills.
· Positive leadership and supervisory experience.
· Passion for and strong knowledge of native plant species and their identification.
· Experience with developing an IPM program using fertilizers and pesticides.
· Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel, SharePoint, budgeting, and work order software systems.
· Large equipment operation, a plus
· Knowledge of irrigation software, a plus
· Experience with GIS software systems, a plus
· Must possess a valid Texas Driver’s License.
Required Certifications:
· ISA Certified
· Tree Risk Assessment (within one year of hire)
Additional Preferred Certificates and Licensures:
· ISA Certified Arborist Municipal Specialist
· TDA Pesticide Applicator License
Abilities Required:
· Ability to work in a public park with a high degree of public interaction.
· Ability to perform heavy, physical labor daily in all weather conditions repeatedly throughout a workday and work week.
· Ability to lift 50 lbs. repeatedly throughout a given workday and work week.
· Sufficient strength, stamina, and manual dexterity to operate power equipment throughout a workday, repeatedly in a work week.
· Must be able to stand, crouch, repel, kneel, stand, walk, and perform various types of manual labor for extended periods of time throughout the workday, repeatedly in a work week.
