DescriptionThe paralegal provides a wide range of professional legal support services to attorneys in the form of basic legal research, summarizing legal documents, providing litigation and pre-trial discovery support, analyzing data, drafting of agreements and business communications. The position involves working in a professional environment and occasional contact with the public, governmental agencies, law firms, management and co-workers.
Responsibilities
- Perform legal and business research and communicate findings in memoranda; create electronic resource libraries as needed.
- Collect, review and organize information and/or documents; create procedures for collection and storage of information; create procedures for law department or corporate practices; analyze or derive statistical or other mathematical data.
- Locate and interview potential witnesses; coordinate communications between witnesses and attorneys, in-house counsels and/or company personnel and outside counsels.
- Draft and revise agreements, answers, discoveries, motions, filings and other documents in appropriate format and subject to an attorney's final approval.
- Monitor developments in MidAmerican Energy Company's pending cases and claims; report to attorneys and management as necessary.
- Draft periodic legal reports and summaries for management; create, maintain and update charts of legal activities and expenses.
- Create and maintain paper and electronic files for trademarks, litigation and other claims.
- Perform additional responsibilities as requested or assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or 6 years work experience.
- Certified legal assistants, certified paralegals and certified advanced paralegals will be given preference.
- 2 or more years working experience in a legal environment.
- Previous experience in employment, real estate, or the energy industry helpful.
- Demonstrated understanding of basic legal terms, proficiency in legal, internet research tools.
- Strong organizational skills, particularly working with document control. Strong personal computer skills; proficient in Word and Excel.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Effective analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and projects concurrently.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of company information.
- Ability to build relationships with a variety of employees and non-employees.
- Ability to obtain information despite real or perceived road blocks.
