Department Information
The Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology (NBMG) is a research and public service unit of the University of Nevada, Reno and serves as the state geological survey of Nevada. Managed as part of the Mackay School of Earth Sciences and Engineering in the College of Science at UNR, NBMG functions as both an academic unit and statewide agency. Its principal scientists are tenure-track faculty members. The Great Basin Center for Geothermal Energy (GBCGE) resides within NBMG and fulfills one of its primary missions, which is to assess natural resources across the state and disseminate data for use by state and federal agencies, industry, and academia.
Nevada has more geothermal potential than any other state and vast amounts of untapped resources, most of which lie hidden beneath the surface with no surface hot springs or steam vents. Geothermal is a key to the energy transition, as higher temperature resources can produce electricity while lower temperature systems can be utilized for direct use (e.g. district heating, aquaculture, vegetable dehydration, etc.). Geothermal resources are therefore crucial for economic development and diversification in Nevada.
Nevada is one of the most exciting regions in the world to conduct research in the geosciences and one of the best for the study of geothermal energy. The successful applicant will have access to many state-of-the-art facilities at UNR, including a new electron microprobe, two SEMs, new fluid-inclusion and Raman facilities, and laser ablation ICP-MS, geodesy laboratory, as well as a fleet of field vehicles managed by NBMG.
