Position Purpose:
Responsible to implement the efficient and correct operation of mechanical, instrumentation and systems-based equipment to achieve the quality performance and safety standards of the company.
Primary Duties/Responsibilities:
- Analyze faults, rectify and ensure correct operation of electrical, mechanical, instrumentation and systems-based equipment, thereby optimizing the performance of process dependent plant.
- Organize, supervise, perform and implement planned maintenance on the plant to ensure required levels of service are achieved.
- Direct the day-to-day activities of mechanics, maintenance craftsmen and electricians to provide effective service and time utilization.
- Direct and supervise contractors and ensure compliance with company and statutory standards.
- Ensure sufficient training of mechanics, maintenance craftsmen, and electricians in electrical, mechanical and /or instrumentation skills to carry out their operational duties.
- Provide accurate and complete plant performance and repair information / logs for entry into computerized maintenance system.
- Analyze and recommend solutions to reoccurring maintenance problems therefore ensuring that the treatment processes are operated with optimized efficiency.
- Ensure senior and plant operators, mechanics, craftsmen and electricians comply with Health and Safety regulations and internal company policies.
- Constantly move about job site and facility to access indoor and outdoor equipment.
- Constantly operate tools, motorized equipment such as pumps and engines as well as computer and other office productivity machinery.
- Occasionally ascends/descends a ladder to service equipment at the facility.
- Very often positions self to maintain equipment including positions such as crawling, stooping, bending and kneeling.
- Constantly communicates with other employees and supervisors about the maintenance of the facility and equipment.
- Must be able to recognize problems and access the seriousness of the situation to take corrective action. Must observe and inspect the condition of equipment to prevent serious malfunctions.
Work Environment:
- While performing duties the employee will be expected to work in outside weather conditions.
- In the working environment there will be automatically starting mechanical and electrical with the associated risks.
- Odors and airborne particles are generated in the wastewater treatment process.
- Dangerous atmospheres can be encountered, and company / regulatory precautions must be used in appropriate circumstances.
- There is a requirement to wear appropriate safety equipment:
- Safety shoes.
- High visibility tunic outside plant buildings.
- Protective clothing.
- In designated areas:
- Safety hat.
- Eye protection.
- Ear protection.
Qualifications
Education/Experience/Background:
- High School Diploma/GED is required.
- Advanced Level – 5 to 10 years relevant experience, technical training or a combination of experience and education adequate to assure the required competencies.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Familiarity and adherence to all environmental and safety compliance regulations.
- Demonstrate the technical skills and competency in the maintenance of wastewater treatment assets to perform all essential duties.
- Language Skills - Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write reports and correspondence. Ability to read and comprehend instructions and memos. Ability to communicate information to senior management both orally and/ or in writing. Ability to provide instructions to staff under his/her supervision. Ability to provide and enter computer data onto systems.
- Mathematical Skills- Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to calculate and interpret mathematical data. Ability to enter data onto computer systems and interpret results. Ability to apply results of mathematical calculations to required situations.
- Reasoning Ability- Ability to understand interpret and carry out instructions and information. Ability to communicate effectively such information to members of the team. Ability to interpret and act on information provided.
- Practical Skills- Use tools and equipment in the correct fashion. Communicate safe and correct use of tools to others.
- Team leadership and supervisory skills will be essential requirements of the role.
- Carry out an efficient maintenance and repair service to ensure optimal availability of key process dependent plant.
- Supervise the maintenance fault analysis recertification and testing of electrical instrumentation and systems-based equipment.
- Work as a team to keep process operational.
- Assign and direct the duties of mechanics, craftsmen, electricians etc.
- Perform planned preventative maintenance of equipment.
- Supervise to ensure compliance with health and safety procedures.
- The Chief Mechanic will be required to comply with all Health and Safety procedures and to ensure the team under his/her supervision also complies with these procedures. Needs a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the treatment processes and the maintenance required for mechanical and electrical equipment that is necessary to maintain compliance with the treatment objectives of the facility.
- Full knowledge of safety practices used in the operation and maintenance of mechanical and electrical equipment and in the general performance of all duties.
- Ability to direct and oversee the operation of equipment for maintenance purposes in the wastewater treatment facility.
- Ability to supervise maintenance, fault analysis, rectification and testing of electrical, instrumentation and systems-based equipment.
- Ability to act as Team Leader to plan, guide and carry out necessary maintenance tasks.
- Ability to communicate with management, and team and produce information as required.
- Ability to resolve problems by planning and assessing priorities and directing tasks.
- Decision making skills.
- Sufficient computer skills for data entry and interpretation. Use of computer-based asset maintenance systems to analyze both financial and maintenance data to optimize maintenance resource. Ability to order equipment on a computer-based ordering system in emergencies.
- Must ensure the safe operation and maintenance of all plant and processes.
- Must be reliable and punctual and set a positive example at all times.
- Must be mentally alert at all times.
- Must be a self-starter and self-motivated.
- Job class requires 40 hours per week which may include scheduled weekend duty.
- Incumbents in this position are expected to be on call and will be required to work overtime as needed.
Required Certification/Licenses/Training:
- RI Certification in Water Treatment (1T) or an ability to obtain through testing or reciprocity within 6 months.
- Valid driver’s license and CDL License with air brake rider and tanker endorsement required.
Physical Requirements:
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.
- The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; climb stairs or ladders; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and taste or smell.
- The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include ability to distinguish color, close vision and distance vision.
