Position: Director of Environmental Health & Safety

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Director of Environmental Health & Safety will, in conjunction with operations and other leaders, develop and oversee implementation of strategies to ensure compliance with relevant regulations, minimizing risk and establish a world-class safety culture.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Formulate long-term EHS strategies aligned with corporate objectives and industry best practices.
- Prioritize initiatives designed to systematically enhance the safety culture, simplify environmental compliance efforts and reduce risk.
- Establish clear goals, metrics and timelines to track progress and measure the effectiveness of EHS initiatives.
- Lead efforts to enhance the safety culture within the organization, fostering a mindset of safety as a core value.
- Implement strategies to engage employees at all levels in EHS initiatives, encouraging active participation and ownership of safety responsibilities.
- Recognize and reward behaviors that prioritize safety, and address any barriers or challenges to achieving a positive safety culture.
- Promote a culture of safety and environmental awareness through ongoing education and communication initiatives.
- Develop, revise, and enforce company-wide environmental health and safety policies and procedures.
- Ensure alignment with local, state, and federal regulations governing environmental protection, occupational health, and safety.
- Lead efforts with third parties and regulatory agencies to obtain and maintain required permits, licenses and certifications.
- Set standards and controls to ensure compliance with air quality standards, water regulations, waste management protocols, and hazardous materials handling requirements.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for third party partners, regulatory agencies, industry associations, and community stakeholders on EHS matters.
- Stay informed about changes in environmental regulations and industry best practices, and advise senior management on compliance strategies.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Thorough understanding of OHSA and environmental regulations.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to develop and implement EHS strategies, improve safety culture, and drive change.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with employees at all levels of the organization, regulatory agencies, and external stakeholders.
- Analytical mindset with the ability to analyze data, identify trends, and develop actionable recommendations for improving EHS performance.
- Ability to thrive in a multiple culture / multi-lingual environment.
- Proven ability to develop, write and communicate policies, procedures, and action plans.
- Intermediate computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
- Familiarity with continuous improvement process, tools and techniques, e.g. TPS, Root Cause Analysis, PDCA, risk analysis
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health and Safety, Engineering, or related field; Master's degree preferred.
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or similar professional certification preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in environmental health and safety management, including culture change and regulatory compliance, in a manufacturing or industrial setting.
- Five years of experience at a department manager level, inclusive of leading direct or indirect team members and expense/vendor management
