Other Conditions: To begin October 2024, pending position clearance, availability of funds, and actual staffing requirements. Position to be located at Hawaii Community College Palamanui campus. Continuation of temporary position subject to funding and program needs. Assignments may involve evening, weekend, and holiday hours, and travel to off-campus locations. Position may be converted from 11- to 9-month, and vice versa, based on operational needs.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Under the general supervision of the Dean for Division II, develop curriculum and conduct program coordination for a collaborative workforce training program in algae culture with Hawaii Community College (HawCC) and Windward Community College (WCC).
- Position will oversee and coordinate the delivery of a Perkins-funded project to develop and implement a workforce development pathway in algae culture that prepares students for entry into the industry.
- Duties include, but are not limited to, research and collaborate with Principal Investigator, institutional, industry and community partners to identify industry workforce needs with potential employment opportunities.
- Develop curriculum, incorporating workforce needs, and coordinate instruction between WCC and HawCC at sites on Hawaii Island and Oahu, ensuring curriculum is consistent across campuses.
- Conduct project outreach activities, assist students with program application, explanation of financial aid options and work-based learning opportunities. Facilitate student retention and completion of the program.
- Train and supervise project lab technicians.
- Maintain project budget, purchase supplies and equipment.
- Monitor, collect, and analyze project data. Prepare reports as required to document achievement of project objectives.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- (a) Master's degree in agriculture, botany, tropical plant and soil sciences, biological engineering, molecular biosciences and bioengineering, natural resources, natural resources and environmental management, tropical conversation biology and environmental science, biological sciences, or ecology, OR,
- (b) Bachelor's degree in agriculture, botany, tropical plant and soil sciences, biological engineering, molecular biosciences and bioengineering, natural resources, natural resources and environmental management, tropical conversation biology and environmental science, biological sciences, or ecology, and three (3) years of related work experience.
Desirable Qualifications
- Demonstrated ability in curriculum development, including online and/or hybrid instruction, especially in algae culture.
- Work experience in related fields such as algology, algae culture, aquaculture, and/or native Hawaiian seaweeds.
- Work experience managing and/or coordinating a grant funded project.
- Experience managing or operating a farm, nursery, aquaculture/aquaponics facility, or similar operation for commercial, educational, or research purposes.
- Ability and/or successful experience collaborating with higher educational institutions, industry and/or community organizations.
- Knowledge of industry workforce training needs for algae culture in Hawaii.
- Demonstrated ability to work with students, peers, and staff.
