Job Overview:
As an Environmental Technologist, Aggregates, you will be part of our Environmental Sustainability Services service group to build up, manage and execute aggregate projects for clients throughout Western Canada. You will be working largely in an office environment, with possible fieldwork and business-related travel estimated to be up to 20%.
Locations: Sherwood Park, Calgary, Grande Prairie.
As a Environmental Technologist, Aggregates, you will be responsible for:
- Working with management and the aggregate portfolio lead to build up the portfolio and ensure continual growth, development, and improvement of technical capabilities through successful project delivery.
- Applying appropriate project management techniques including effective change management, leadership and mentoring of team personnel, maintenance of the client relationship and creating conditions that result in long term repeat business.
- Preparing proposal and executing projects including, but not limited to, obtaining all necessary approvals (Surface Material Exploration, Surface Material Lease, Conservation Operation Reclamation Plans, COPs, Activities Plans, Water Act Approvals, etc.), compliance monitoring, and liaising with clients and regulatory authorities, and required reporting.
- Assessing project requirements and client needs for the development, preparation and management of work plans, budgets, and implementation schedules.
- Collaborating internally with teams and departments within MEMS to ensure efficient execution of project work.
- Mentoring staff on completing approvals, applications, reports and field work including, but not limited to, wetlands assessments, Water Act applications, reclamation liability estimates, conservation and reclamation plans, detailed site assessments, reclamation certificate applications, etc.
- Proficiency with submitting applications through the Digital Regulatory Approval Systems (DRAS) and the Electronic Disposition System (EDS).
- Supervising and mentoring staff to develop technical and project management competencies in accordance with MEMS expectation.
- Providing review of documents at an elevated technical level in accordance with MEMS senior review requirements.
- Participating in technical and safety programs, quality assurance, and quality control.
- Working with senior staff and group directors to enable and facilitate growth, development, and cross training opportunities for MEMS employees.
- Providing detailed information into MEMS systems on new work and staffing needs that will enable excellence of execution of assigned workloads.
- Supporting the Environmental Sustainability Services group, the Reclamation and Construction Service group, and actively pursue opportunities to promote the development and growth of the groups.
- Participating in staff recruitment, and
- Other duties as assigned.
What You Bring:
- A minimum of 6-8 years of directly related experience in executing and managing aggregate projects.
- A bachelor’s degree or diploma in environmental sciences or similar.
- Eligibility for membership in a professional organization such as AIA, ASPB, or APEGA (or other provincial equivalents).
- Experience tracking and managing projects and costs.
- Knowledge and experience with pits and surface material guidelines as it relates to Alberta Environment and Protected Areas (AEPA) and Alberta Forestry, Parks and Tourism (FPT).
- Knowledge and experience with Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act, Public Lands Act and Administration Regulation, Water Act and Wildlife Act, at minimum.
- Basic knowledge of biophysical aspects such as wildlife, terrain, soils and vegetation.
- A service-oriented attitude with a desire to provide innovative environmental solutions to complex client sites.
- A drive to adapt new technologies to carry out environmental investigations.
- Motivation and drive to seek out new challenges without being asked and consistently improve processes and tools.
- Clear and effective communicator with strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail.
- A willingness to travel.
- Excellent safety attitude.
- Ability to work effectively in a team setting and independently.
- A valid Class 5 driver’s license.
