JOB SUMMARY: This poisition is located in Blue Ridge Parkway, in the Visitor and Resource Protection Division. This is a temporary promotion not to exceed 1 year and can be extended up to 5 years. This temporary promotion may be made permanent wtihout further competition. Open to the first 100 applicants or 09/20/2024whichever comes first. MAJOR DUTIES: Serves as the District Ranger for the Central District of the Blue Ridge Parkway in the division of Visitor and Resource Protection. Directly supervises two GS-11 field supervisors and is second line supervisor to six GL-9 field rangers. Acts as the point of contact for law enforcement patrols of Guilford Courthouse. Manages the district budget and ensures purchasing regulations are being followed. Purchase needed supplies. Ensures staff attends required trainings. Interact and work with district facility managers and interpretive staff. Attend district meetings and core team meetings. Liaison between the Chief Ranger's office and field law enforcement staff. Lead daily operations and direct the completion of collateral duties related to training andleadership. Work with the GS-11 field supervisors to set work goals. Responsible for all aspects of employee supervision including performance planning andappraisals, employee recognition and employee counseling. Maintain effective relations with other agencies, contractors operating within the park, adjacent landowners and the visiting public to encourage support for Blue Ridge Parkway and National Park Service policies and programs. Maintain good working relationships with local union stewards. Manage law enforcement operations with the Blue Ridge Music Center Events working directly with interpretation and maintenance divisions. Additional Information This is a secondary-administrative law enforcement position under the special retirement provisions of 5 U.S. C. 8336 (c) (CSRS) and 5 U. S. C. 8412 (d) (FERS). PLEASE NOTE: Applicants may meet qualification requirements, but may not be eligible for special retirement coverage. If such an applicant is selected, they will be placed in the regular retirement system. To be eligible for Secondary retirement coverage under CSRS, an employee must transfer directly (without a break in service exceeding 3 days) from a primary position to a secondary position. To be eligible for Secondary retirement coverage under FERS, an employee must: 1) transfer directly (without a break in service exceeding 3 days) from a primary position to a secondary position, AND 2) complete 3 years of service in a primary rigorous position including any such service during which no FERS deductions were withheld, AND 3) must be continuously employed in a secondary position(s) since moving from a primary rigorous position, except for any break in employment from a secondary position that began with involuntary separation (not for cause).
