General funds, to begin approximately January 2025, contingent on satisfactory performance, operational and program needs, actual staffing requirements and availability of funds. Position pending position clearance. Position may be converted from 9-months to 11-months or 11-months to 9-months, as well as from non-tenurial to tenured track as operational needs are required.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- To develop, maintain and teach courses in the Fire and Environmental Emergency Response (FIRE) program.
- Works under the guidance of colleagues to develop an understanding of student needs in discipline or area of primary responsibility.
- Works independently and with the guidance of colleagues to develop, select and implement strategies to meet student needs and to develop student learning outcomes.
- Develops curriculum and aligns courses to meet student needs and college objectives.
- Prepares, develops, revises and implements course outlines, student learning outcomes, syllabi and related course materials as needed to meet program requirements.
- Serves as faculty mentor to students.
- Maintains subject matter currency and be willing to continually update courses to keep up with college and student needs to meet industry demands.
- Assists in the development of courses that results in Firefighter I and II certification, and/or the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) certification, and/or Pro-board / IFSAC certification.
- Performs regular course assessments and participates in ongoing discipline, program, and institutional-level assessment. Implements adjustments to course content and professional practice to improve student learning in classes taught.
- Participates in department, industry advisory meetings and division meetings.
- Related work activities include, but are not limited to, course scheduling, program budgeting, maintaining program articulation agreements, assisting in campus-related student activities; participating in faculty/administrative committees, campus and community service, and in-service training; maintaining an approved program of professional self-development; independently planning, organizing, and carrying out instructional and non-instructional assignments, and in collaboration with the Dean, Division Chair, faculty and staff.
- Maintains relationships with industry professionals. Works cooperatively with campus and off-campus organizations to develop courses for targeted groups; and to develop and teach non-credit courses.
- Commitment to community college principles and philosophy is essential. The College emphasizes the “open door” concept, works to ensure student success, and serves a diverse student and community population.
- Must maintain at least one office hour per week for each class taught at a time convenient for enrolled students.
- Must be available for evening, weekend, and off-campus assignments (e.g. military bases, attending recruitment events.), secondary education sites (high schools) and/or distance education learning assignments for courses taught via the Internet. To teach on a military base, Department of Defense security clearance will be required. To teach Early College courses for DOE schools, background checks will be required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:- Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science or related Natural Sciences plus three (3) years of related work experience in Fire Science/Fire and Environmental Emergency Response occupations; OR
- Associate’s degree in Fire Science or related Natural Sciences plus five (5) years of related work experience in Fire Science/Fire and Environmental Emergency Response occupations; OR
- 15 college credits plus seven (7) years of related work experience in Fire Science/Fire and Environmental Emergency Response occupations.
- Minimum qualifications must be met by the effective date of appointment. If qualified applicants are not available, others will be considered as acting instructor.
Desirable Qualifications:- Willingness to keep abreast of technical development in the field of Fire and Environmental Emergency Response.
- Ability to work with a variety of colleagues from other disciplines, student support services and industry partners to help accomplish goals of the program.
- Evidence of successful teaching in a community college setting or post-secondary level.
- Experience in developing/modifying college level courses.
- Experience in working with diverse, multiethnic student populations.
- Possess supportive attitude toward student learning and be able to create a nurturing classroom environment for students of diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Demonstrated success serving as a mentor, advisor, or team leader.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively.
- Demonstrated ability to function independently and as a member of a team.
- Experience in use of technology to support instruction and student success, including but not limited to LMS, CRM, Early Alert and presentation software.
- A willingness to adapt to new technology platforms as needed for student and program success.
