DescriptionThe controls engineer is responsible for designing, developing, installing, managing and/or maintaining equipment which is used to monitor and control BHE Renewable’s solar and battery units plant logic, SCADA and control systems, and engineering systems. Makes sure that these systems and processes operate effectively, efficiently and safely. Controls engineer needs a thorough understanding of the operational processes and demonstrates familiarity with instrumentation, telecommunications, metrological and solar arrays, programmable logic controllers (PLC), human machine interface (HMI) programming of control systems within the solar and battery power plants. Maintains compliance with all company and regulatory compliance requirements. Directs, coordinates and exercises functional authority for planning, organization, control, integration and completion of electrical engineering projects of moderate size and complexity (approximately $5,000,000).
Responsibilities- Ensure the reliable and efficient and safe operation of all controls and measurement systems at the Santa Margarita and Rosamond solar and battery facilities. Provide support to plant operations in daily control problems, continuous process improvements and remote equipment monitoring. Design and implement new control systems. Test, maintain and modify the existing systems to achieve greatest productivity for solar and battery generation plant.
- Identify and incorporate new ideas and technologies for project development. Recommend economically viable projects. Manage assigned capital projects by performing the following: understanding the technology involved, performing a management of change (MOC) request, working with purchasing on developing a request for proposal (RFP), performing a project estimate, which leads to writing an authorization for expenditures (AFE) to acquire project funds; purchasing required equipment, developing all pertinent P&IDs, PFDs and line drawings etc. Initiate, implement and complete project work as assigned or otherwise. Manage all costs incurred in the project, keeping scope changes and overruns under control.
- Reviews process and equipment design for compliance with engineering principles, company standards and contract requirements and specifications. Analyze data and write technical report and recommendations. Prepare control system basis of analysis and design documents.
- Provide technical and consultancy support on instrumentation and controls system and project activities for maintenance, operations, engineering and procurement. Maintain close contact with these groups to evaluate plant equipment performance, recommend design/specification improvements, trend project performance, keep up to date with the technology incorporated in the field.
- Provide input into major overhaul planning/scheduling contract services, and project activities. Assist in preparing annual capital and expense budgets and developing new business proposals
- Perform any additional responsibilities as requested or assigned.
Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in engineering or equivalent related work experience (Typically six years of related, progressive work experience would be needed for candidates applying for this position who do not possess a bachelor's degree.)
- Five years of related experience required, ten years preferred.
- Knowledge of various types of electrical and instrumentation uses and devices. Knowledge of low, medium and high voltage electrical applications. Knowledge of asset and work maintenance systems and general knowledge of technology applications and equipment.
- Effective oral and written communication skills, including presentation skills.
- Effective analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical process control.
- Project management skills; ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and projects concurrently.
