Our Offshore Wind Energy group is seeking a Fire Protection & Technical Safety Offshore Wind Engineering Intern - Summer 2024 to work out of our Houston, TX office. This temporary position is seeking individuals currently enrolled in an Undergraduate or Graduate degree program with an anticipated graduation date of August 2024 or later.
This 12 week internship will be part of the WSP Summer Internship Program that is scheduled to start on May 20th, 2024. The individual start date of the internship may be flexible.
Your Impact
- Learn basic principles of Fire Protection & Technical Safety Engineering.
- Assist with ensuring conformity with applicable rules, standards, and construction or operating permits.
- Assist with the development of technologies, monitoring devices, modeling techniques, design requirements, load calculations, and operating strategies implementing future-ready solutions with fire protection engineering design standards.
- Write technical reports summarizing research and specifications with findings and conclusions, generating complete, accurate, and concise documentation.
- Assist technical staff and project managers with risk identification and assessment.
- Work with cross-functional teams in executing project work.
- Complete training on assigned tasks.
- Work collaboratively with other engineers, architects, and building and infrastructure authorities on Federal, State, regional, and locally funded improvement and development projects.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
- Please note that there is no relocation or housing assistance associated with this internship.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
- Actively enrolled in an accredited Mechanical Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering, or related Undergraduate program.
- Demonstrated interest in Fire Protection and Technical Safety Engineering, or related field, and have a strong desire to advance skills related to WSP’s work and projects.
- Analytical mindset with an ability to exercise sound judgement in evaluating situations and making decisions.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
- Capable of self-leadership with attention to detail, accuracy, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
- Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, technology, and tools.
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
- Authorization to work in the United States at the start of the internship.
Preferred Qualifications
- Actively enrolled in an accredited Mechanical Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering, or related Masters or PhD program.
- Familiarity with fire protection, plumbing and mechanical engineering principles, practices, process, design/build, safety codes and philosophies, and the application to project work-related issues.
- Experience with discipline-specific design software (i.e., AutoCAD, Revit).
- Engineer in Training Certification.
- Prior internship and/or prior design experience.
