- Drive climate action campaigning to shift the institutional finance sector
- Would suit changemakers and strategists from finance, energy, or consulting
- Asia - remote, local working rights essential, an Asian language preferred
The Organisation
The climate crisis threatens the future of life on earth. To help solve it, an energy revolution is moving the world beyond fossil fuels. How, and how fast that revolution happens will determine the future of humanity.
The Sunrise Project is a global network of experienced change-makers with a mission to drive the global transition beyond fossil fuels. With programs and staff across Asia, Australia, Europe, and the Americas, Sunrise sits at the intersection of social movements and philanthropy and has developed a ‘directed network’ model of grant making and campaigning that supports people and organisations to achieve large-scale change that would not have been possible by individual organisations acting alone.
Shifting finance is a key strategy in the global effort to transition from fossil fuels to clean energy. Policies adopted by financial institutions to limit support for fossil fuels are having a direct impact in the real economy, driving up the cost of capital and shifting the cost/benefit equation for new projects.
Benefits & Culture
Sunrise has a dynamic and nimble organisational culture that supports its people to thrive, believing that diversity of experiences and perspectives builds stronger strategies, teams, and movements. The following benefits are in place to help achieve that:
- Generous package in line with experience and with international expectations
- Liberal annual, parental, birthday, solidarity, and cultural leave
- Commitment to professional development and employee assistance programs
- Coaching, performance reviews & management feedback
- Intermittent travel with advanced notice may be required
The Role
Working at the forefront of climate action with world-leading INGOs, this newly established leadership role will be responsible for leading and coordinating strategies to shift Asia’s financial system to drive the transition from fossil fuels to clean energy. The role will be key in identifying opportunities to shift both public and private finance, advancing climate related financial regulation, and harnessing the power of the financial sector to drive policy change.
The successful candidate will oversee a team, contribute to the overall strategic direction and vibrant organisational culture, manage a portfolio of grants targeting think tanks, advocacy groups, and civil society organisations, whilst building deep partnerships with regional partner organisations and the Sunrise global finance leadership team.
Skills Required
You have a deep understanding of how power operates in the Asian corporate and financial sectors and are passionate about accelerating the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy. You are an experienced strategist and creative, big picture thinker with a track record of leading high impact change strategies which have delivered real world outcomes in corporate or government policy.
If you do not already have expertise in the finance sector, your work demonstrates your understanding of the drivers of investment decisions in the Asian energy sector and you have related strategy and professional experience. You can rapidly master complex policy, regulatory, and political dynamics and you are a skilled collaborator and a strong facilitator, able to collaborate effectively with people from all walks of life – from community activists through to business leaders and financial regulators. You know what it takes to support your team to thrive and to bring the best out of people. You are skilled at navigating difficult conversations that build trust and leave relationships stronger.
