New Leaf Energy is seeking an Energy Storage Technical Lead to join our team! This position may be filled out of our Lowell, MA, Boston, MA, Chicago, IL, Oakland, CA, or Troy, NY offices. We value in-person collaboration and offer a hybrid work environment. Hybrid employees work in the office at least two out of every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, and are free to work from the office or from home on other days.
About the Role
The Energy Storage Technical Lead will provide development and engineering thought leadership, deploying deep understanding of energy storage products and system optimization to identify opportunities to create more value for customers by pursuing current and future energy storage solutions. Together with a team of design engineers, civil engineers, and electrical engineers, this role will define the solution set that differentiates New Leaf Energy’s business to develop highly valued transmission and distributed scale projects, and enable us to efficiently grow our energy storage business into new market territories and applications.
The Energy Storage Technical Lead will fulfill a key leadership role on New Leaf’s energy storage team, a small, cross-functional group with responsibility and decision-making authority over New Leaf Energy’s entire national energy storage portfolio. The Technical Lead will work closely with representatives from the project development and project finance functions to manage the performance and growth of New Leaf’s energy storage business.
In partnership with IPPs, internal stakeholders and external vendor partners, the Technical Lead will contribute to design specification, optimization, and costing of our energy storage plants to maximize New Leaf Energy’s value to our customers and reduce our costs to deliver. The Technical Lead will actively support our design engineering team in their goals by working closely with our engineers and clearly articulating how New Leaf Energy’s leadership in technical design creates value for our customers.
Position responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Translating the specifications of OEMs into technical specifications for regional applications;
- Creating standard operating procedures and tools that empower internal stakeholders and enable them to work effectively and efficiently toward developing new projects;
- Defining and maintaining energy storage equipment standards to be used by the design engineering team;
- Collaborating with the New Leaf Energy team and vendors to maintain accurate and competitive cost models to facilitate costing for new projects;
- Providing value engineering and other technical sales support for design engineering, project developers, and the finance team;
- Supporting the evaluation of new equipment components and other direct cost reduction initiatives with key stakeholders from electrical and design engineering teams;
- Defining standard engineering deliverables that enable our project teams to dramatically improve their execution efficiency;
- Managing and solving key challenges that arise during development, and creating a central location to store that knowledge;
- Training new engineers on our energy storage systems and designs;
- Learning from internal customers in the office and in the field, and managing closed feedback loops to continuously improve our standard product design and deliverables;
- Participating in interdisciplinary Kaizen events to improve our process.
Desired Qualifications

- 3-5 years’ experience with commercial or utility-scale energy storage and solar PV development, design or construction;
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, electrical, or other engineering discipline;
- Demonstrated understanding of the market for commercial and utility-scale energy storage engineering services;
- Experience with designing and modeling renewable energy coupled with energy storage;
- Experience and familiarity with commercially available storage technologies;
- Working knowledge of fire and building codes, electrical standards (UL/IEEE) and National Electrical Code, U.S. utility interconnection standards;
- Familiarity with Lean problem-solving techniques and tools and excellent problem-solving skills;
- A strong entrepreneurial drive and desire to impact the company’s performance;
- Excellent communication skills;
- Strong team leadership skills;
- Comfortable working with a collaborative team in a fast-paced, quickly changing environment.
Compensation
New Leaf Energy compensates all employees in three ways: market-competitive base salary, plus above-market variable compensation, plus an equity-like program such that all employees experience the benefits of ownership. We use a data-driven and transparent methodology to calibrate compensation that is externally competitive and internally equitable, guided by the New Leaf Energy compensation manual, which is available to all employees.
Under our compensation framework, the likely base salary range for this position in Lowell, MA is $130,800-$148,870. Your actual salary may be above, in, or below this range, depending on your location and experience. Compensation for this position includes an incentive plan, about which we can go into detail in the interview process.
