DescriptionManager, Project Management (Renewables Development)
This position will lead the Development and Asset Management of various commercial activities related to project development, evaluation, budget, schedule, and execution (EPC). Additionally, the position supports the project development siting strategy and the process to ascertain regional power market fundamentals and addressable market. The position will also assist in strategic corporate initiatives (e.g., new technology, asset divestment, etc.)
MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Leads the development and execution (EPC) of greenfield self-developed projects or projects that may be acquired as part of single project acquisition or a portfolio of projects or sites
- Leads project development and execution (EPC) of efforts including: due diligence, business case development, risk assessment, contract negotiation and supports any and all activities up until handoff to operations
- Leads the project development siting strategy and the identification of prioritized areas for project development based on technology application and expected addressable market
LOCATION
- This position will be located at the Southern Company Energy Center in Birmingham, AL with the potential for hybrid work.

Education
- A four-year degree is required with a preference for an engineering, engineering technology, finance, economics or accounting (or equivalent) discipline; An MBA or other advanced degree is preferred.
Experience
- Combined 5+ years of experience in developing/executing (EPC) utility scale generation projects, electric system operations, generation O&M, generation engineering or project analysis and evaluation – required
- Experience in the power and / or renewable energy industry is highly desired. Additional experience in asset acquisitions and contract negotiations is a plus but aptitude and attitude is of primary importance.
- Experience in development, evaluation/ due diligence, and implementation of solar, wind or gas-fired projects - desired.
- Leadership experience including building teams, setting strategy, prioritizing and leading technical teams - desired
- Experience in, and/or interacting with the following disciplines: engineering & construction, business development, project development, operations & maintenance, finance, accounting, procurement, environmental compliance, permitting, and transmission - desired.
- Experience and interaction in regional power markets - desired.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Thorough understanding of engineering and economics related to power generation including concepts such as: megawatt, megawatt hour, solar resource assessment/energy prediction, wind resource assessment, capacity pricing, energy pricing, investment tax credits and production tax credits.
- Project management skills are required. These skills include the ability to work across multiple organizations, lead a team toward a common objective, resolve problems and demonstrate clear, effective communication skills.
- Ability to identify project risks and mitigations, development of business cases for capital investment decisions (including forecasting of cost, revenues, and returns), and financial statements is highly desired.
- Familiarity with EPC, Power Equipment, renewable OEM’s, long-term service and maintenance contracts and contract negotiations.
- Self-starter that works with a sense of urgency; works well in a team environment; maintains a positive attitude despite constantly changing priorities.
- Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills; may be required to present to SPC Management Council as needed
- Innovative, entrepreneurial and experienced in working in a competitive industry
- Create and drive processes to successfully develop utility scale renewable projects
- Ability to make decisions with limited data and identify/ quantify risks associated with those decisions
- Ability to consider both analytical data and commercial/ financial implications in making sound decisions
