JOB SUMMARY: What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position? This is a term appointment not to exceed 13 months months with possible extensions up to a total of 4 years without further competition. Appointment to this position will not convey permanent status in the Federal service. Salary: $54,914 (Step 01) to $71,390 (Step 10); NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01. MAJOR DUTIES: As an Engineering Technician within the Western Ecological Research Center, some of your specific duties will include: Conduct periodic remote fieldwork to install and maintain wildlife monitoring stations. Work with research biologists to enable accurate data collection using remote data collection stations in potentially hazardous environments including marine habitats, remote islands, steep mountains, and offshore oil platforms. Plan work and coordinates directly with other scientists to resolve technical problems. Collect and summarize digital telemetry data and metadata to evaluate remote telemetry data and sensor station operational status. Deploy data-collection systems often in remote areas and manipulates and analyzes data from these systems. Perform work to custom design, assemble, operate and evaluate technically-sophisticated remotely-deployed, solar-powered wildlife sensing stations. Complete field construction and installation of remote RF telemetry stations that can be used to automatically monitor marine birds, bats and other wildlife. Operate a government owned or leased vehicle as an incidental driver. Physical Demands The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion, such as: frequent climbing of tall ladders, staging, or scaffolding in dry-dock and vessel areas; working in areas where footing can be treacherous (e.g., on rocky banks of bodies of fast-water, slippery docks, or steep hillsides); lifting heavy objects weighing 50 pounds (i.e., 23 kilograms) or more; and frequent crouching or crawling in restricted areas. This position requires work in difficult terrain, including hikes of up to 10 miles per day with a 30-40 pound backpack, in extreme weather conditions, sometimes for long periods. Work Environment The work environment involves high risks of exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress requiring a range of safety and other precautions where conditions cannot be controlled (e.g., working at great heights under extreme outdoor weather conditions).
