JOB SUMMARY: This position is located in the Canyon District of Grand Canyon National Park, in the Visitor and Resource Protection Division. The park may fill an additional position for the South Rim District. MAJOR DUTIES: Canyon Major Duties: Provides first-level, day-to-day supervision to a staff of permanent full time and subject to furlough law enforcement rangers, who are performing investigation, apprehension, or detention of individuals suspected or convicted of offenses against the criminal laws of the United States while working within the Inner Canyon and along the Colorado River corridor. In coordination with the District Ranger, develops goals and objectives for the Canyon District river patrol operations. Supervises and conducts patrol operations conducted by Canyon District employees to ensure protection of park visitors, residents, and resources. Performs as a member of an all-risk management team for additional lifesaving operations within the park. Contributes to operational plans, procedures and guidelines related to law enforcement and emergency operations that often involve collaboration with other park divisions and cooperating agencies. Works closely with partners and stakeholders within the Colorado River community. South Rim Major Duties: Supervisor ensures that law enforcement, medical calls and other all-hazard emergencies occurring in the South Rim district are staffed and managed appropriately. South Rim District Supervisor coordinates schedules, leave, shift activities, training opportunities, and special assignments to ensure staffing levels are met and the operation adapts to crime and incident trends. South Rim District Supervisor ensures that reasonable and necessary law enforcement actions and techniques are utilized. Area Information: This position is stationed at Grand Canyon National Park at the South Rim located in Northern Arizona. The South Rim is located approximately 60 miles north of Williams and 82 miles Northwest of Flagstaff at an elevation of 7,000 feet. Temperatures range from approximately 90 degrees in the summer to 0 degrees in the winter. Annual precipitation averages around 13 inches. The office facilities and employee housing are located on the South Rim, however, the primary work occurs on the Colorado River, supervising the law enforcement patrol of the Colorado River corridor within Grand Canyon. Grand Canyon Village has schools K-12, a daycare center, post office, general store, churches, a recreation center with gym, a public library, a clinic with resident physicians, and several restaurants. The park community consists of some 2,500 people, including employees of the NPS and concessionaires and their family members. There are often employment opportunities for family members in the park and surrounding areas. The park community is small enough that many employees choose to walk or bike from their homes to work. Complete shopping, educational, medical and professional services are available in Williams and Flagstaff. Flagstaff has a population of about 66,000 and has multiple K-12 public and private schools, Northern Arizona University, and diverse community, medical and other support services. Recreational opportunities include hiking, backpacking, fishing, cross-country and downhill skiing, and golfing in nearby communities. South Rim Housing: Permanent and Term employees with a Full Performance Level (FPL) of a GS-09 or WG-8 and above will be provided the option of accepting assigned housing, participating in the normal bid system, or accepting shared housing. Permanent and Term employees with an FPL of GS-08 or WG-7 and below may be provided the option of participating in the normal bid system or accepting shared housing.
