Project summary
Wildlife crews will support Sequoia National Forest vegetation management and fuels reduction efforts by performing habitat assessments and population surveys of sensitive, threatened and endangered species. Surveys focus on CA Spotted-Owls & Northern Goshawks. All survey work informs NEPA planning and paves the way for the post fire restoration and hazardous fuels reduction projects.
Opportunity description
Wildlife Crew Leads oversee field surveys, data collection, and crew safety, coordinating daily and weekly tasks. Crew leads will manage communication with USFS, GBI, and the technicians. Crews will focus on surveys for CA Spotted-Owl using broadcast acoustical surveys, nest location and nesting habit monitoring, raising and breeding mice, and additional species surveys based on forest need. Project specific training will be provided.

Requirements and qualifications
Requirements
Experience in conducting surveys for Spotted-Owl, minimum two seasons required. Experience in conducting surveys for Northern Goshawk and other raptors, strongly preferred. Experience leading crews in the field, including oversight of crew safety, communication, fidelity to methods and data quality. Proficiency in navigation using GPS, topographic map and compass. Experience in standard field methods for wildlife surveys, status assessments, and habitat characterization.
Preferred qualifications
Ability to safely operate and maintain a 4WD vehicle on and off paved roads. Experience with camera trapping protocols. Familiarity with and interest in resource management issues of western states and the ecology of the Sierra Nevada ecoregion. Familiarity with Sierra Nevada forested habitat types. especially east slope. preferred. Ability to understand. implement and adhere to established data collection. inventory. assessment. and monitoring protocols.
